America’s Cup Endeavour Racing Yatch (1:75) from Occre - Build Log

The package arrived seven calendar days after I placed the order on launch day and was securely boxed. I opted for the display stand, the paint set, and the proper woodfiller. A complrehensive set of build instructions, rigging plans, full-sized drawings, and an inventory sheet was enclosed. The loose parts are a nice plastic tray and neatly organized. The wood seems to be of excellent quality and straight (zero warping that I can see). I will open the remaining inner packing, perform an inventory and mark all of the wood parts per the plans this evening, with the hope of starting the build tomorrow.

The plans require you to install A15 (which creates the rest of the mast pocket) forward of A8. This is incorrect. A15 goes aft of A7. The other issue I am running into is that the slots for the ribs are cut too large front to rear, allowing the ribs to cant. You're left to favor the front or the rear of the pocket. I used the deck temporarily to judge the correct position, and favoring the forward placement is the best bet. You will have a few tabs that interfere with the deck, but not so much that you cannot affix the deck to the structure.

Well Doc., keep up your reports so I can check back later in a few months/weeks when I start this model. Am working on the Philadelphia gun boat from 1776. Patience is very hard.

Years ago, I had the opportunity to sail on a replica of the original America's Cup ship. I posted images of it on here at the time. I suppose it's on here somewhere.

I am going to search for it. I found and ordered a book from Amazon with a ton of photos that I thought would help

That completes my progress for the day on my first PoF and my first build log. Am I giving enough detail, too much detail? Are the pictures helpful and detailed enough? Feedback is more than welcome.

I am appreciative of the sharing, especially about a favorite subject, and the efoirt behind getting this complex hull assembled. Images are super helpful.

This is a double layered planking, a thicker basswood with very thin Mahogany as the second layer. The deck edge is lower that the next row, so the nails will have to be removed before sanding the height variation and the instructions have you use wood putty as a filler and to give a smooth surface for the much thinner layer of Mahogany to glue to. I’ll post again after i get the first layer done, it will take multiple nights of trimming, bending and glueing to get there. So far, a simple soaking in boiling water is softning up the planks enough for the light twist and shallow curves needed. I have not needed the plank bending iron yet.

what are your thoughts about the "hand held" rails along the deck? The kit shows wooden rails but the videos show metal railings.

I have found while OcCre kits are good with adequate instructions, there seems to be a lack of quality verification and checking of documentation in there last few productions. Just keep one eye open for things that don't seem right, and also, highly suggested to read full instructions several times before you build to make sure an error like you spotted don't show up again.

Hello and a friendly hello,

I wish you every success in building this model and hope you can realise everything well. Unfortunately, I am no longer a friend of OcCre models (ship), as they usually always come in a rough scale. You have to do a lot yourself to make it look true to scale. With your ship, it will probably be very difficult to make a smooth wooden hull at all. So you will probably have to do a lot of work with filler and wood filler.

I wish you every success and I'll pull up a chair to watch your building progress. I am also building an OcCre model, the Black Swan. I'm going to rebuild it quite a bit, though, because I don't like it and it looks really rough. Unfortunately, as a modelling novice, I hadn't considered this.

Your pictures are great and I can also understand your way of writing. I would therefore be very happy if you continue like this.

Best regards

Günther Ship-1

As for your build logs, they are good, you show photos of what is being done and what problems are, and listing issues, which helps you get better answers to questions. The comments also will help others who will review this build when they start their build logs.

Keep up the good work, and faith that you will get this finished in the end, I have kits I have set aside and pick back up and work on as time and my temperament allows.

This kit is an example of requiring you to do things the hard way. Double planking? Endeavor had a steel hull!

For a high quality yacht like this there would be no lapped joints like normal riveted construction. Rivets would be driven thru an internal backing strip. Or, as she was built in the 1930’s some seams might have been welded. In either case, great would have been taken to obtain a perfectly smooth hull.

If I were building this model, I would skip the second planking layer and would “butter” the hull with Bondo to end up with realistically smooth hull.

The provided handrails are password. I might switch them out to something more scale and realistic.
