can anyone shed any light on this kit? Is it considered value for money as I am sorely tempted but dropping £1000 on a single kit may lead to divorce!!

Any help/comments greatly appreciated.

Cheers Neil

I'm of the same opinion 1k wow. But another dilemma is caldercraft victory at the same price. I'm really torn between both of them. Like the idea of the open hull but are you getting the same quality. Not only that with the lighting and figures certainly going to push you over 1k.

Looking at logs and their website photos, the AL looks OK. In their videos the cannon look like Borgard pattern guns which were made from 1716 to 1724 rather than Blomefields that came into use in 1790 and some other things that need to be replaced or modified, but overall looks like it offers a lot of nice internal details. Regardless of which you choose if you decide to invest, you might benefit from having a copy of The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships. Used copies are cheap and easy to come by.

Artesania Latina used to have a Victory kit way back when. I have always wondered why they stopped making it. It was very similar to the Caldercraft one, if I am not mistaken. I mistakenly purchased it and being my first model it was a total disaster. I also remember that there was not enough lumber in the kit, which was extremely frustrating. At the time I had paid about 900 CAD for it.

It's an emotionally have to have! From looking at the video I feel like the price would be worth it--fun to build and you'd have an amazing piece of work afterward. The wildcard (considering it's AL) is the quality of the materials which are a big part of the value for money equation.

If you want to try a low budget approach, I did a cutaway of the Sergal Soleiel Royal with a fairly small incremental cost over the original kit (barrels, LEDs, ply) by bashing the kit. Here is the build log: https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/threads/mantua-sergal-soleil-royal-cutaway.5120/ So I think you could turn any kit into a cutaway, but it wouldnt' be as close to reality (I won't say accurate) as something like the AL kit. Good luck!

I have been on the lookout for a Caldercraft Victory and now AL releases their Victory. This has really confused me as I am now torn myself. The AL has some really great interior components and it is a really interesting model as far as teaching you how these ships operated. Never built an open hull ship so that intrigues me as well. But, the Caldercraft has a long history of being the finest version on the market......what to do??????

get both. ROTF

Only just seen this release as I have been doing things non ship related.

I really, really like this and IMHO is cheaper than I anticipated watching the video.Alot of detail for your money. One observation is it looks like the internal decks could be ply with planking laser etched. Not a fan of this as the character of the wood runs across adjacent planks and looks wrong.

My only other question is to those that have built these sort of models, how do you display them as you cannot see both sides without being able to walk around the model?

So far, this is the only Victory kit available that appeals to me, however I still have their Soleil Royal and Trinidad on the slipways along with several others. I maybe tempted if I saw an unboxing, who knows but I am very near to the point of drawing a line against any further projects. Thirty plus years of work in my stash and I am 53 now!
