Barquentine

Mike,

Thanks for your post.. An AJ Fisher kit of the Schooner Challenge recently sold here on SOS for about $40. Tempted but I am currently involved in a very long termed scratch building project, the Great Lakes Freighter Benjamin Noble. Build log here on SOS.

I actually prefer solid hull models. I only build two types; solid hull and one true POF. I build realistic painted models so the POB models do not interest me. All of my model are scratch built.

I just finished reading Twilight for the Gods by Ernest Gann. A story of a old ship ( barquentine) and the myriad of troubles it encountered.
I Googled barquentine and it looked like a interesting model to build. But I haven't found a kit that fulfils the definition of barquentine -square rigged foremast and fore and aft rigged main and mizzen. Has anyone run across a kit?

THANKS

Hi Bob,
If you were looking to have a go at scratch then I would suggest having a look at the incredible plans drawn by Harold A Underhill for a wooden 2 masted Brigantine "LEON". There is also written by Harold A Underhill 2 books "Plank on Frame Models" volume 1 and 2, these 2 books were written as a guide to build the "LEON" they are books I find invaluable.
Here is the LEON, https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-68469

By the way Harold built the LEON with what might now be considered a modest workshop, if you bought strip wood you could have a fairly basic setup to do the job.

For the plans you might have to search a bit but here is a start. https://www.modelerscentral.com/mod...-ship-plans/ship-model-plans-brigantine-leon/

Cheers,
Stephen.

The Leon was my first model via the two volumes mentioned above, but after I completed it, I abandoned kits for scratchbuilt, and found them a lot easier.
