Batavia 1628 (1:72) Kolderstok Build log

Sadly the replica here in the Netherlands is getting more of a sad thing. Mast clipped, sails gone. Bah. In the good old days she was magnificent.
I agree, saw her only a few months ago. Why can't the government throw some funds at it, pull her out of the water ,build a shed, just like the Vasa? It's probably never going to sail again. This ship is a national treasure.

Yesterday, I went to the Batavia shipyard in Lelystad for the first time in a long time. Although the ship was still in poor condition, there was good news! They've raised the funds to lift her out of the water and put her on display on land. According to the shipyard staff, the ship will be lifted out of the water in about a year and will then have to dry for a year before being put on indoor display.

That's great news

Hello builders and forum visitors.

Thanks for the likes and the comments.

After the midweeks update a small weekend update.
I had some time to start with the sets of Fore Shrouds. For the Batavia that are 9 sets. The last one has a shroud on portside and starboard.
After fixing the length I start fixing the deadeyes. So they are in line with the green planks on the side after tensioning.
To make sure they do not turn they are fixed with 2 small drops of glue on the back.

Next week I hope to fix all deadeyes and start to tension all the shrouds and ready for the ratlines.
See you next week.

Really nice build. The riggings spot-on.
Did those ropes come with the kit or did you make your own?

Hi @Neil_jo,

I do not make my own ropes. But,...
I work with 3 type of ropes/thread.
First the one from the kit. If I can use them in some parts.
Second I use polyester thread from "Serafil". In different sizes and colors.
And the most of my ropes, polyester, I use from "Modellbau Takelgarn" from Hannover, Germany. Online.
So I have a wide collection of threads and ropes in different colors from 0,1 to 2,1 mm.

I case of the Batavia I use mostly the ropes from "Takelgarn". Dark Brown and beige.

Last week all the deadeyes are fixed in place on the shrouds. All 18 on the fore mast.

After that I fixed the lanyards just in place but with almost no tension. But in the right direction.

After that I start tensioning the lanyards. 2 Starboard, 2 portside, etc...
I done 4 on each side so I do not bend the mast to one side. I did 4 on each side Friday.
Yesterday I cut the excess length of the ropes. Oops.... on the 3de lanyard I cut a piece of the shroud. Sharp scissors.

Not the long part to the top, but the short end. It was already tied up.

So next week I have to fix the mistake and hope to tension all other lanyards.
See you next week.
