I know you built a very nice model of Jeff Staudt's "Batteau". I thought I'd give that a go as a little side project (I must have a short attention span!). I decided to cut the deck and simulate the planking with scoring, and that turned out fine. I cut out the stem and sternpost and tried fitting them to the deck. The deck is quite pointy at both ends, and the stem and sternpost sit on it, leaving little triangular voids (white arrows). How do these get planked? Wouldn't it have made more sense to design the deck with the "points" cut off at the stem and sternpost (dashed lines)? If I do that, the lodging knees probably won't fit. Do I just leave it as in the photos?stern.JPGstem.JPG

Hi Dave,
The Batteau is a nice project, I used it to get away from tying ratlines on another model I was building at the time. I don’t remember what I did about the pointy ends it didn’t seam to matter because they are not seen on the finished model, if I was building it now I would bob off the ends and adjust the stem and stern posts accordingly to maintain the overall length and the lodging knees will fit fine. On my model I used yellow hart for the exterior planking and it was difficult to work with, it looks good on the model, but I would use something easier to bend on another one, like one of the fruit woods. Good luck with your model.
Mike
