It seems to be a common and practical practice to form hanks/coils of rope on the bench to hang on belaying pins rather than trying to coil excess running rope in situ.
As an extension of this process I have experimented with tying pre-formed hanks to a belaying pin on the bench. A running line could then be threaded through a hole in the pin rack, tensioned and then secured by plugging in the complete pin and hank assembly. Whether this is any advantage I have yet to discover. Perhaps it will be useful in some locations.
Basically I am bored waiting for PSM to deliver my next kit so I am using ship build hours to faff about with left-over fittings.

by making up the coils on the bench with a "tail" on them, they can handily be belayed to a pin with a half hitch. I use an application of clear shellac which gradually stiffens as the alcohol evaporates from it to form the shapes required to fix the coils into a shape which appears realistic.
