We went to the three day Formula Ford racing school in Mont Tremblant and learned how to really drive. We used the old F1 course there! I am sure there are similar schools in Europe. I went back for lapping school some weeks later for two days of advanced driving to get lap times down but to be competitive you need to be under 20 years old to start when you still do not know what real fear or common sense are. :) (This was MANY years ago when I had little fear and no grey hair)

That's a great experience you had.
I have race many years ago on Spa and Neurenberg with my own car. There where special days for amateurs. My friends in that time love to drive fast. The last car I raced with was a Alfa Romeo 164 24V6 , that was a fast car. You could only drive on the German highways at the top with it.
These day I only watch others doing it. The fast driving times are over after a few big prices (give by the law :cool: )

Quality blocks like these two in particular are not cheap but they look great. Compare all prices, even between these two suppliers, as there are big differences. One consideration is that there are not very many sizes from any supplier, but at our scales this probably is not a problem for most builders.
Comparison below. These pictures are from their websites if you want to compare more closely. Look at these and blocks in photos of contemporary models then decide what suits you best

I don't know if this is quite fair to Model Shipways - they have a line the market as Beautiful Blocks that are very nice and are made of wood. https://modelexpo-online.com/search.asp?keyword=beautiful+blocks These have been my go to blocks. Syren has two types of blocks. The ones pictured above are not made of wood. Syren also markets wood blocks as mini-kits that you assemble.

I've used their blocks and have been very happy. It depends a bit on what material you want to use. HiS blocks are walnut, so are quite dark and don't need staining. Pearwood blocks are often smoother, due to the really fine grain, but are light in color, so if you want them dark, they need staining, which is a pain. But all those mentioned are really good, just depends on what you need or want.

Wow, what is the top speed? Mine was in 1991 277 kmh. He want to go faster but the car was blocked at that speed. There are not much familycars that go faster then 220 kmh.
 
Zoltan at Drydock was kind enough to have a special order custom made for the restoration of the EL Terrible Spanish model 74-gun Trafalgar ship ca. 1800 from the Roger's collection at the USNA Museum, which included some outsized large blocks for this very large model (40+ inches on deck). For which the museum remains most grateful.

Top speed according to the manual is 160mph = 257 kph. I never did more than 230 though - on the Autobahn ( Cologne to Calais in 3 hours) but that was when both the car and I were younger. Despite Alfa's uncertain reputation at that time it was built, it has been a very reliable car.

I agree with Uwek, Dry-Dock models are the best in quality.
There are some suppliers that produce in resin, with 3D printers. The parts that I had the opportunity to see still have a very artificial appearance in color and texture.

As the old saying goes, "there are old drivers and there are bold drivers, but no old bold drivers" for multiple reasons.

I am looking at using Syren blocks and rope for gun tackle hoists on a Heller 1/100 HMS Victory.
Blocks 2 or 2.5mm are correct scale size and used by most modellers - rope for smaller 12 and 24 pounders would be 0.2mm at correct scale.
However, I am told by Syren that this is out of scale and too big. Furthermore 0.2mm rope might not fit their blocks.
Does anyone have any experience of this?
