Anyone built Bismarck? I completed the Amati kit last year - lots of tiny pieces!

I built the Hachette partworks series of Bismarck in 1/200 scale a few years ago. If I had my time over again, I would buy the big Trumpeter kit in 1/200 scale.

I built the Trumpeter 1/200 kit a couple yes back. Used the Pontos upgrade kit also. It took me 3yrs to build and still needs a couple small things done to it along with the rigging. It was my first kit with alot of photo etch so I left it all in the natural brass and didn't cover it up with paint to show just how much of it there is. Model came out pretty well and I enjoyed the build. I have Yamoto and Enterprise under way in 1/200 and about 8 other 1/200 kits to do after those. Retired now, but still can't find enough time to work on them alot. There are photos of my Bismarck on this site if you like to see them.

A retired friend explained my lack of productivity now that I am permanently rusticated: It takes twice as long to do half as much!

I know the feeling! I'm new to this site and struggling finding your photo of Bismarck. Could you point me in the right direction please.

Hello Steve, I also built the Amati Bismarck meanwhile years ago. I have no build log in this forum, but you can see a series of pictures of her in the gallery of finished models on page 15.

Greetings Werner

I am truly humbled by your exquisite workmanship Werner. I'm afraid my efforts fall well short but as with all construction one gains satisfaction from ones own level of achievement.

Hello Steve,
Thank you very much for your appreciation and enjoy your building of the Diana!
After the Bismarck I built the USF Confederacy from Model shipways. If you like to have a look, you will find a build log here as well as photos in the gallery of finished models on page 23.

Greetings Werner

Hi Steve,
sometimes there are too many bits to justify the model appearance, looking at your Bismark I'd certainly be hard pressed to notice what and where bits were missing!

I have Caldercraft's Diana in my store and I think I should start soon. Age is catching up with me and apart from a scratch 1/6 gondola she's most likely my last big build. My plan is to add the sails as well having mastered the soft tissue paper method of making them for a Pandora restoration last year.
Are you proposing a build log? And where are you up to? Starting the masts could mean you've completed the hull etc can I ask how long that took?

Aye, Kimmo

I bought the Amati Bismarck kit just after Christmas and started the build almost immediately. I’m very impressed with the instructions and quality of all materials. The laser cut wood is precise. The plastic components are detailed, accurate and high quality. I’ve never worked with photo etched brass very much and there is a lot of it in the Bismarck kit.

The hull has gone together quite well, Double planked. I still have lots of sanding to do. The mix of wood, plastic and PE brass materials makes for interesting construction techniques.

The 1:200 scale is testing my hands and eyes. I’m using bright lights, magnifying lenses and tweezers a lot, but still having fun!

Hello Brad, I wish you very much fun building your Bismarck, and - if you don't have already one - I recommend to use an airbrush as well!

Happy modelling

Werner

Thanks Werner, I do have an airbrush. I’m not an expert at using it but it will definitely get used on this project. I’m trying to imagine how I will mask the patterns for airbrushing. The airplanes and various smaller boats should be fun!
