Hi. Here you would find my build log of the Black Pearl ship from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The motive behind this project was strong- my daughter asked me to build that ship from her favorite movies and to build her as more authentic, realistic and weathered as the ship presented in these movies.
So... daughter wishes are fathers commandments and I took the tools in my hands :)
Project started in February 2018.

Hi Uwe, This model is build upon plans made by ZHL company. But I found them in some details incorrect so I modified them a bit.. I changed the flat stern to slightly curved as in the real ship, than I extended the lower deck, opened some stern bulkheads so I could place half- opened doors, and some other details as well

The second planking layer was done by walnut veneer strips. I made a simple but very efficient jig to cut wide veneer plates into the strips and cut them manually. Walnut is the kind of the lumber that was very often used to build ships at that time so I have chosen that wood for planking.

G'day mate
A very interesting project and I'll be watching at this space in the future.
One question though. Are you building this for your daughter or yourself? I think she's a good reason to tell your wife. Lol :D:D:cool:
Havagooday and if it's father's day on Sunday where you are havagoodone.

The simple jig for cutting veneer is shown on pictures below: I used a MDF or plywood board 2cm thick as a base, and attacked by screws 1mm thick aluminium strip 5cm wide and about 80cm long.

Than I used one alu-L- profile for guidance The distance between L profile and aluminium strip limiter could be adjusted for desired planks with. L profile is attacked to the base with 2 screws but between L profile and the board there are some spacers with the thickness of the veneer.

I simply protrude veneer plates below L profile until stopped by alu-strip limiter and cut it by round or normal OLFA cuter. I can say that all the veneer plank strips were cut very accurately and at the same with with really minimum tolerance.

Greg.. my wife really appreciate my hobby and like my work so I didn't have to search for reasons :) My daughter (27) told me once that she would only ask for me for her wedding gift once she decide to marry- Black pearl made by me. Since she got her master degree in the University and started PhD in physics and well could soon be married- I started this project so I would not be late with her gift :D
