Bluebird of Chelsea 1/18 Motor Yacht

Hi Duncan,
This may be of use to you when you build the hull of Bluebird. When building my RMS Titanic hull, i researched how to plank a traditional wooden carvel hull. I have uploaded the diagrams i made as a result of my research as they will be clearer than attempting to describe the process in words.
As you'll be aware, the problem of the planking the hull surface, without gaps, as it swells from the bow to midships and then contracts again to the stern is often solved with 'stealer planks'. Well, this would never be permitted on the real thing! When the hull surface demands that the planks taper to < width/2 they would use a technique called 'spilling'. A plank of less than half it's normal width will have a reduced surface to fasten to the frames which will weaken the joint and increase the chances of it springing in a lumpy sea. Also, with Titanic at any rate, the planks have to flare significantly as they go into what the shipwrights of Nelson's Navy would term 'the deadwood', zone of the hull. This may be less of an issue with Bluebird, she being a transomed stern hull. Anyway, you can have a look at the diagrams and if you decide that you'd like to go authentic to the original they'll serve as a start point.
Salaam!
John

Hi Duncan,
I just got an email to say that there are no 1:18 Bluebird kits in stock. I suspected, at the back of my mind, that this may happen. They're trying to offer me the 1:12 but, for me, it's too big and simply isn't practical. How are you getting on with them?
John

Hi John,
I have just got a similar email as well! I'm gutted - it seems they are 'trying it on' to get rid of the larger kits since you have been in this same situation before!
I think the larger kit is also too big for myself. I feel awful that I got you to follow up this supposed availability - profound apologies!
I've ordered the book about Bluebird of Chelsea and it should arrive later this week.
Please keep in touch.
Cheers
Duncan

Hi Duncan,
no need for an apology - you were in good faith! I had an an atom or two of doubt that this may happen when i ordered it anyway. I too suspect that they may do this to try to soften up interested parties into buying the bigger version when they otherwise wouldn't be interested. Ah well... never mind. I might buy a grandfather clock instead. You can get an early 20th century one for under £250 and then bring the movement back to life. I'm going to get a book. Might be an interesting project. Oh, and i've still got loads to do on my RMS Titanic. Hope you settle on a nice project. I'm surprised that one of the more established model boat kit firms haven't produced a Bluebird yet - she's such a stunning boat.
All the best and good luck,
John.
