Build log Chesapeake Double Kayak from Model Expo

I next installed the seats and the seat backs. There are 2 laser cut pieces of wood. The seatback you curve around a container and both you then cover with some black felt and glue into place. Once that was done I carefully drilled some .025" holes to place the bungie cord holders. It was easy to do. Some black elastic line is then wrapped around the nails and tied off.

So of course I wanted to use some polyurethane on the hull. I should have done this before the nails and bungie cords. I removed the bungie cords, gave the hull and deck a light sanding and put on 2 coats of poly acrylic, sanding between each coat.

After reattaching the bungie, I started working on the buckles for the hatches. Six PE pickers are included. I cut the connections as flush as possible with each piece and then filed the sides smooth with a small diamond file.

The buckles were threaded with some ribbon. These were strapped across the hatches and held in place with nails along the side.

With that the Kayak is finished!

All in all thi was an easy project. The only exception was gluing the deck and coamings into place because the wood was difficult to curve. I believe it would have been helpful if the instructions suggested wetting the parts and clamping them overnight to dry. It probably would have been easier to shape them before one surface was sealed.

The kayak is nice and if I were into kayaking perhaps it would have ment more. I bought this at a sale price of $39. Would I buy it again at that price, no. I think this kit was way over priced for what it delivers.
