Building the Endurance

Testing the Mast top running lights & they work. You might also note the front mast dead eyes have been moved off the rail on to the hull side as the other masts. Except for this kit, I could find no evidence that the dead eyes were fixed to the rail, in fact what photos I have seen suggest otherwise. I would be please to hear other opinions ( preferabley with evidence)

Fitted the masts & sails (fitted not yet fixed). Just to make sure that my next step does not get me into trouble. I think the order of doing thing becomes important at this stage.

Well I have brought the front lifeboats inboard and removed the smoke stacks that the kit proposed (I checked every photo I had and they were nowhere to be seen). The lifeboat are a bit higher than I would have liked and as indicated on the photos but my staircases (which I like) sort of demanded this to be in any way realistic. Now the davits, I have provided for supports on the outside of the lifeboat supports but this will mean modifying or replacing the kit davits. we will see. - I think I will use different davits to those in the kit for the front lifeboats

Another in-boarder for the forward tenders. I just used the Occre supplied davits with modification. Good work.

Well I have finished the wiring for the lights ( you might notice the junction box on the forward mast). The power comes from two AA batteries in the base with contact made through the keel of the ship. I inserted two small springs in the base pedestals, so contact is made when the ship is inserted on the base with an on/off switch on the base. Also made some davits for the forward lifeboats, Was initially going to modify the kit davits but I broke one. Tried to get replacements from the kIt maker but this did not work very well ( said they would get back in 5-10 days & this was 3 weeks ago so I lost my optimism for this solution. Instead I ordered 2.4mm brass rods from China and made my own. They are simple but meet the requirments. ( Might revise later - Maybe)

Well I complained about OCCRE reacting to my query in regard to davit replacement. I should not have done that. This morning the pictured package arrived unanounced. They were not clear in their reponse but they rapidly complied with my problem. To OCCRE, I apologise

Isn't that often the way ... hope the new davits work out for you.

The stairs that come with the kit are not great. I note that some builders chose to make their own out of wood & this allowed them to install hand rails. I tried to move someway towards this by using the kit brass stairs but adding wood side pannels so that I could install hand rails. THEN :---- I discovered some stairs on ALIexpress at almost the right scale that included side rails. Cheap and not bad. I am quite impressed with them & will use them in lieu of the kit stairs

Could you please provide a link for the stairs.

Now attending to the upper Rat lines and the 3mm dead eyes. I am supprised that there is no dead eyes on the upper rat lines but that is how I will install them as per instructions

It may just be nomenclature and I am guessing you are talking about the shrouds, not the ratlines. LIke you, in looking at photos it appears there were no deadeyes for the topmast shrouds.

front dead eyes off the rail on to the side board. this is where I think they should be
I am guessing you are correct, the deadeyes were secured to narrow channels (side boards) not the rails like was done on fishing schooners.

I had difficulty finding details on the front mast deadeyes, I relied in the end on earlier models of the ship. If you have any photos detailing the front mast deadeyes, I would be very interested in seeing them

Hi Omega
Are you asking about the foremast deadeyes or fore topmast deadeyes? In spite of what the model posted above shows, based on contemporary photos of Endurance I don't think there were any deadeyes for the topmasts as discussed above.
