Char on Laser Cut Parts

Do laser-cut hard wood parts bind together better (with wood glue) if the char burns are removed first. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed a difference, but I’d like other opinions.

There are two reasons to lightly sand the char off of the parts. First, glue and paint will adhere much better to bare wood than char. And second, when the laser cuts the beam is deflected a bit, so the cut is not perpendicular to the surface. Sanding off the char trues up the edges.

Speaking of char... been experimenting with laser cutting planks and using the char to simulate caulking. Here is some of the testing we have done on 3/32" basswood. Can also use the laser to etch 0.04" diameter treenail engravings.. or cut out a 0.03" diameter treenail hole.. angled cuts fit perfectly as well.

That looks like a great idea Mike. Are you able to simulate scarf joints or anchor stock planking?
