Clarion Angel figurehead for Mamoli "flying Cloud"

Dear Peter
you have done wonderful carving work on the Clarion Angel. thank you very much for your explanation and photos

Peter,

The carving is great. Thank you for sharing. By any chance did you have a reference image or woodblock image from the Clarion Angel figure that was actually (attached) to Flying Cloud?

Scott Bradner made a drawing of one that is virtually identical to mine, although I never saw his drawing until after I carved mine. Bradner's Flying Cloud Plans and drawings are available on his website. I made mine close to the Blue Jacket offering (still available) only mine (and Bradner's) have her left hand holding the trumpet along with the right hand (a more natural position I thought), rather than with her left arm rather stiffly straight back along her left side. The only period references come from early paintings and print advertisements. I reduced the length of the carving slightly for her final mounting on the ship in order to better bring her into scale. You can see the result on my
Flying Cloud by Mamoli kit bash build log thread.
I used the 19thc. meerschaum cigar holder pictured above (copied from a Michaelangelo painting) with the other photos as a reference for the wings.
By the way, it is carved from boxwood, not basswood, as originally mis-labeled. Basswood hasn't the density to take detailed carving at such a small scale.
