Erm, thank you very much but I might have entered a random date (although I don't remember to have been asked for it actually). I am a bit paranoid about these things - sorry, I hope no one feels offended.
The guns are now in place:
I am unsure about the next steps. The current plan is to put some supports on the gun deck that will carry the upper deck.
Than (maybe) add the masts? Then produce the upper deck, again in two halves as I did with the gun deck.
It might be tricky to get the half deck in place if the masts are already there, but I am concerned that if I add the deck first it'll be hard to align the masts well upright.
Also: Should the masts be mounted blank and the sails be added afterwards or is it better to completely build a mast including sails before mounting it to the hull?
I guess I'll have to give these questions some heavy thinking before proceeding.
Last week and today I went ahead and added the upper deck.
First I glued some supports on the gun deck:
I then cut out the upper deck using the plans and adjusted it until it fitted right in. Since the approach of using two halves had worked out well for the gun deck I did it the same way again:
Next I glued in the masts and then the deck halves:
Really nice to finally see progress after all these months of planking
Filled the upper deck's centerline gap with putty, sanded it and applied the first layer of paint.
The color is inspired by pictures I found of the hermione rebuild but I am thinking it is too gray in comparison to the rest of the ship.
Comments are welcome
Although it doesn't look like it, this took several sessions, but I have now modelled the weirdly shaped construct on the rear end. Still need to plank it but here is what it looks like:
I made some strategic mistakes in the assembly order I guess, I hope to be able to cover them up a little bit with the planks.
