Started the Corel Flying Fish in March of 2019, built mostly during (3) South Carolina winters when the yard didn’t need any attention, I finally completed Corel’s Flying Fish...despite the outhouse quality plans and directions. This is my second build, the first being the Artesania Latina Swift Pilot boat. Next up the Occre Cala Esmeralda.2022.03.13.1.jpg2022.03.13.2.jpg2022.03.13.3.jpg2022.03.13.4.jpg2022.03.13.5.jpg2022.03.13.6.jpg2022.03.13.7.jpg2022.03.13.8.jpg2022.03.13.9.jpg2022.03.13.10.jpg

About the quality of the plans and directions of this corel flying fish you are completely right.I built it also one year ago.I spent nearly more time to encrypte the plans and directions then building it.My flying fish is without sails .Within next days i plan to sent the photos to SoS.
You made a nice work, congratulations:)

Thank you! I look forward to seeing your Flying Fish

The present phase of my Flying Fish is in the attachment.I want to put the original sails on her next days. I attached also a functional dinghy because it seemed to me a little unfinished and lonesome.
Kind Regards from Boshorus:)Pirate Flag

These look brilliant - I started one twenty years ago but ground to a halt over the plans issue - especially the foredeck having found quite a difference between the plans for what I assume is the same vessel in Howard Chapelle's The American Fishing Schooner. Your completed models look great :) - I should get back to mine :-/

Hi Kit
Flying Fish I posted to SoS is a model from Corel designed by Giorgio Fonio navaly consulted by Roberto Greco Scale 1:50. I've bought this about 35 years ago and I built it in the years 2005-2006. At that time I decided to finish it without the sails because it is easier to protect and clean the dust.It stays open without a cover. I want to attach the sails in next days. The speciality of this modelis the rounded stern .I viewed many Flying Fish models .90% of the are with cornered stern. My opinion the rounded stern gives a more dynamic touch to her.
The original of was designed by Jeremiah Burnham and launched at Essex, Massachussetts, in 1860 .She was more than 20 years the most representative ship of the Market Schooner class. She was the fastest in the Gloucester Fishing Fleet. The huge sail area and unique and unusual construction made her capable of carrying the catch of fish from the famous Grand Banks to the ports where the catch was sold first (early bird catches the worm is the right proverb I think)
I attached outside and deck view
Enjoy your modeling:)

Hi Korsan, your model looks great - I wasn't overly concerned about a rounded deck rail c.f. squared, (Chapelle's line plans stop short of that rail), it seems obvious much was rounded except the simple curved transom common to both plans.

Chapelle gives a little more of the history after leaving the Gloucester Mackerel fleet - working the Antarctic Seal and Sea Elephant fisheries. Despite varying dates (1857 / 1860) it seems obviously the same vessel.

The main issue confusing me was the forward step in the deck, (directly under '51' on Corel's drawing), which is absent in Chapelle's plans. See under.

As I can see ,the anchor holes and capstan details are not drawn. Actually it is the same vessel. If you want more details I can send photos of the other plates too. At my model I improved the attachment of the dinghy .It was not shown in the plans and without the escortboat it looks boring and unfinished. :)

Thank you Korsan, if you have any plans or info beyond Corel's and Chapelle's I would be very interested :)

Thank you very much for your offer. That is very kind.

I do have the original sails, so thank you but no - but it was very nice of you to offer.

Welcome
I want to built the sails of FF masts with black rings. They should look better than the shiny brass effect on the reddish wood background of the masts. I blacken the rings with diluted selenious acid rather than painting black.Painting is not that permanent while working.
Kind regards and enjoy your modeling:)

Super beau !
Je fais le même pour l'instant, je débute dans le modélisme et sur ce forum.
Auriez-vous des photos du montage de votre Flying Fish ? Merci

Hi Tanguy
First a warm welcome aboard to the community.:)
My build is not 100% finished now ,I am still working on it. Probably within next week I will finish her.
To her existing plans I added the anchor chain treating - and the hanging of the tender boat facility. The are not included or shown on Corel tables of the Flying Fish.
Further I darkened the brass rings of the sails chemically and for fastening the sails I made holes using 3 .0 and 3.5 mm brass eyelets.
I made some photos of the present status to show important details .If you need further info,I will be glad to answer
Kind Regards and have a nice weekend

Tanguy
