Hi gang,
just found out I have Aspergers syndrome. I have also been told that people with this syndrome are fanatically passionate about certain hobbies and not interested in things the general public do to entertain themselves.
For example my ship modelling hobby sees me spending 4-5 hours a day, 7 days a week working on my models. I also get passionate about things like antique clock repairing and growing bonsai.
Just putting this out there on the forum and thinking there would be other people like me here.

regards Brian.

Lucky you, Mon Amie! I have 'difficulty to find the time for modeling' syndrome :p For me, it is still a hobby, and most of the time I spend at work. I have to bring food to the table, no excuses! Maybe when I will retire...but that is not in near future...Nah, I have three grandchildren - those are the best hobby I can own. ;)

Brian, I think that in our retirement state and this COVID situation we are more inclined to stay more focused on particular things and involvements than working people who do not have the "luxury" of more dedicated activities such as you mention. For most of my life I have passionately taken up different interests where I dive in deeply, spend a lot of focused time, and then perhaps in my life goal of becoming as aware as I could of as much as I could, (not wanting to specialize in any one) after about seven years would move to another that was more convenient at the place to where our family had moved/transferred. I looked up AS for the symptoms and perhaps have a few to a minor degree but associate that with just being human. I tend to take problems and let them flow around me and not trying to solve or react to what I cannot affect and focus on what I can. Hopefully your situation will stabilize itself as you mention several areas of interest which require skill and knowlegable background. Personally not being tied into Facebook it seems that SoS engagements are my substitute that adds to my own high time consuming activities in all of the Masonic orders and bodies of which I am a member/officer. SoS alerts are my time out to let the glue dry and not continue to work on other parts of my present schooner build for the time being. There is always tomorrow for those but personal engagements, even with fingers dancing on a keyboard are of the moment. Enough rattling on. Take care and enjoy what you can for all that is around you. Rich

Out of curiosity, I just looked up aspergers 10 symptoms..... I'm not saying I have it, but I have every symptom. I'm 57 years old. Have speech impediments, a few physical deformities (not noticable unless you look close) can't stand being around people. Have no patience except for what I enjoy. My question is, how does this affect you physically? thank you

Then many great and creative men (and women) had probably Asperger. I think of Beethoven, Michelangelo, Kafka...

Hi Brian,
a colleague of mine has Asperger's syndrome. He has a blog (in German) and reports about his every day joys, fears and problems.

I'm not a psychologist, but 4 or 5 hours a day does not seem extreme to me. Actually I usually work 8 hours a day or more on this hobby, every day. My wife has her own interpretation, but I think the male brain is divided into several boxes without any connection to each other and my box with ship models turns out to be a little bit oversized. If someone wants to call that Asperger, he has my blessing, but I am really enjoying this disease. If you want to accomplice something, you will have to go for it all the way. The only thing you might wonder is wether or not model-shipbuilding is important enough to dedicate so much of your lifetime to it. I don't know, but there seems to be very little outside my box that is interesting enough to hold my attention, except of course my wife and kids. :)

I DO NOT HAVE AUTISM, BUT AND BESIDES COVID I TOO SPEND ABOUT 5 HOURS A DAY WITH MODELING, MY PROBLEM IS DYSLEXA IT TAKES ME QUITE A WHILE AND SOMETIMES ASKING THE SAME QUESTIONS UNTIL UNDERSTOOD, MY LATE WIFR AND LOVE OF MY LIFE PASSE 13 YEARS AGO I LIVE BY MYSELF BUT ONLY 50 FEET FROM DAUGHTER IN A SECTION THAT THEY BUILT FOR ME NEXT TO MY SON-IN-LAWS PARENTS, I AM BY NATURE A LONER AND I DO ENJOY MY OWN COMPANY, I TAKE A LOT OF BREAKS PEA, PEAS AND DE-CAF COFFEE. GOD BLESS STAY SAFE ALL YOU AND YOURS DON

Hi Ken,
all I can say is that apart from my immediate family, I cannot be bothered with friends visiting for more than an hour or so.

I prefer my own company and not socialising with people to the annoyance of my wife. I am also very passionate with a few hobbies, but not the least interested in sport.

That sums things up pretty good.

I resemble that,

For a part, you are right, Ab. Take a look at this for a clear explanation about the boxes:
With special at +/- 04:00: the Nothing Box.
Regards, Peter
I may be in trouble as I don't know where my "nothing box" is or may be I am in it without knowing that I am which would negate the nothingness as it would then become something but maybe still isolated from the other boxes that are presented for men in the entertaining video. Sorry to confess that I can't turn off my brain as it is processing too many things, not necessarily simultaneously but possibly in a confused sequence. . . . ?????? and that leads to mistakes in model building which have to be undone and redone over and over. Rich (PT-2)

Hi all, I'm a medical Doctor, altought not a psychiatrist, actually. Most of us just may have got some traits of autistic spectrum. Even in that case, no warries: my theacher always told me that simple trait isn't a disturb at all and it just eventually makes us better and less shallow guys.
