Don't like to advertise, but I really have to share this tilting vice with you.
Was looking for something like this and there are more, but this is the only one I could find (reasonably priced) wide enough to be able to grab my hull.

Looks like you really really trust that device?
As a newbie, I'm asking when does the final stand get fitted?

When vices are concerned, I won't even trust myself!
But I don't understand your question. You just fixate the ball with the blue ring, and you fixate your subject by turning the handle. You could of course put extra padding between the subject and the grip.
If you mean the stand of the ship; this is for doing extra paintwork I should have done before doing the sails and the rigging.

I guess you have a finished cradle stand you just lift the ship in and out of? Once you set up a pedestal stand, I imagine it would be hard to go back and forth?

Oh no, not at all! Nothing is easier. It is just a plastic kit sitting unglued on a plastic stand.
