Dremel

Although I love my corded Dremel and its many attachments for sanding etc I find I do the best job sanding bulkheads and tapering spars (my current build the Bluenose has spars that are tapered on only three “sides” with one straight side so I can’t pop the dowel in my drill and sand it that way) with my trusty old “sanding block” which is a six inch length of a pine 2X4 that wrap sandpaper around one end!
I also use a commercial sanding block with wedge/shaped sides for getting into corners.

I have excellent control when sanding by hand. One slip with a power sander and you’re in trouble.

I also use my wood sanding block as a backstop when drilling or cutting or hand-sawing wood pieces. Full of scars but still works great lol.

I sand with my power tools too, of course. I find power sanding and filing much easier with removing excess solder etc but often use hand files (needle files) for the fine stuff.

I’m not sure about the other brands but I love the Dremel and its many attachments. And it’s true: try to buy higher end tools, they’ll do a better job and last much longer.

Have no doubt, a small sanding block will get 100 times more use than any rotary tool.

The $13'ish hand held corded rotary nail tool has decent torque to it, speed control and is reversible. You can purchase a whole host of bits for it by searching " bits for nail tool " or something similar from Ali baba. Very handy little inexpensive tool. Colous or Coulous is the brand name. The bits shaft diameter is about 3/32" whatever that is in mm.
Go buy one.

Is it powerful enough or does in bog down when cutting? Most of the small tool don't have the power of a larger Dremel.

These tools definitely do not have the torque of a Dremel but they do a decent job especially on the softer woods we commonly use. The great advantage of them, especially for me, is that they are quite compact, fit easily in your hand and are not as bulky as a Dremel. They are much easier to use around delicate parts. The sanding drum comes with a number of different grits and you can buy more cheaply. I use mine constantly while the Dremel is used only occasionally like for cutting metal tubing. You can't beat the price.
