Kit or scratch builder, most of us are trying to model something from the past; ships. And, often the key to getting it right is …Research! While the internet has certainly opened more paths for this, internet posts can leave much to be desired as they are often aimed at the general reader and lack details that we are looking for. To really gain access to the specialized information that we need, a reference library is essential. Or, you gotta buy books!
Quality books can be expensive, and can quickly fill up available space. I have recently found an alternative; Early Bird Books. This is a free service available to readers in the USA and Canada. Subscribers receive a daily list of discounted Ebooks via Email. The books can be bought from your favorite source; Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. Prices are low; $2 to $3.
The service is not aimed at ship modelers. Most of the books are fiction including the usual “bodice rippers” but occasionally useful ones show up, and although I still like “real” books, I have found that first browsing or reading these cheap E copies can tell me if I want to add the more expensive hard copy to my library. For example, I recently bought a $3 copy of Sailing into History, a review of the performance of replica sailing vessels. Although interesting, I will not buy a hard copy.
