Endurance - Occre New project

After spending a year and a bit building the Amati Santa Maria I finally decided whats next on the slipway. Any advice will be greatfully recieved.

Ive been looking at drawings of the Endurance and it seems to show metal plates on the lower bow. Do any of you chaps know if this is correct please?

Hi Tony,
What drawings are you using? Endurance did not have metal sheathing at the bow but rather it was specially constructed to withstand ice encounters with a bow made of oak timbers with a cumulative thickness of 52" according to one source. The Endurance Conservation Management Plan in section 2.1.1 states that the maximum hull thickness was 30 inches. It does not state if the bow was thicker though. You may want to contact them and ask about the now timber thickness.

I am currently building the Endurance. I am an intermediate modeler at best, using my own color scheme in some places and not worrying too much about historical accuracy. I find this build to be pretty straightforward. My only advice is to watch the YouTube videos from Occre as you build it. Some steps in the instructions are obvious but others are not. I’ve made a number of small mistakes but over all I am happy with my progress.

I only just realised its actually the Polaris.

Sir Ernest Shackleton bought the ship named Polaris in 1914 and renamed it Endurance. He chose the name based on his family motto, "Fortitudine Vincimus" (through endurance we conquer). Maybe not the most thought provoking piece of information, but maybe somewhat interesting for anyone wanting to know more about her. Based on what happened, perhaps not the most appropriate name.

Im toying with the idea of staining the deck. This is the colour ive selected - what do you chaps think? To stain or not to stain?

Myself, I would go for something lighter, like oiled teak, but what you have picked should look great!

Further deck colour testing. Indian rosewood this time - cant make up my mindsnow.

A little progress today. I put the planks on the bow piece. Im using the indian rosewood stain and a 4 butt shift pattern. Its sanded ready for varnish.

Thanks, Im making slow progress, its beem a bit too cold in my workshop to do much recently

Things have moved on in the past month, and ive managed to get the hull almost done. bending the wood for going round the stern was very frustrating as the supplied wood just kept breaking, until i found a decent bit of walnut from a previous kit.
