so i decided to try something new.the model im currently working on is an r/c model (artur)so it needs waterproof covering. i used the lightest weight fiberglass cloth and laminated it with uv resin. it worked really well. advantages were no mixing and almost unlimited work time..when i was satisfied i just placed it in the sunlight and soon it was set up and dried.

Things have definitely changed. A friend and I did a full project back in the 70's when I worked for PPG Coatings and Resins division. We started with plans that we got from the boat yard for an Islander 36 sail boat. We made the plugs for the hull and deck, then used these to make the molds with black gel coat and glass so we could make multiple models. When the molds were finished we prepped with release wax then applied white gel coat then loose (unwoven) fiber glass cloth soaked in resin. Woven glass looked awful as no matter how thick the gel coat the weave seemed to show through in spots. The loose fiber matting worked perfectly. LOTS of steps to get to the end but now it seems to be a heck of a lot easier with a UV cure resin. Hope to see some photos of your work.
