Hi All,
I'll attempt to recreate my Flying Cloud build log that was previously hosted on MSW.
I think that the best approach will be to sort my photographic record in some logical order and comment appropriately.
So, I guess the start is the Unbox and Framing stage....

I initially bought this kit, probably about 15 years ago from "Ages of Sail", if my memory serves me correctly, an early edition from the newer "Duesk" re-release.
From the get-go things did not look all that good, a glaring omission was the lack of material/s.

Moving on, time to dry fit/adjust/repeat....
The photos of the False Keel show the width discrepancy of the components.

Worse was to come.... Bulkheads that were sloppy/Bulkhead slots not deep enough/too shallow/etc.
Seems like I had got myself a "Friday afternoon/Monday morning" item.
One other thing that really irked was that there was no provision for housing the base of the Masts. (This was sort of solved with the addition of short lengths of Brass tubing. It's something that I will have to be very mindful of when I step the Masts in the near future.)

I'll continue this thread tomorrow.

Cheers.... HOF.

A warm welcome HOF!
I'm curious to see how the final result turns out.
Hi Peter,
Me Too!! :)

There are some "Current" photos are in my "Introduction" to the forum.
I'm trying to re-boot my log that was destroyed on MSW.

I am hoping that the content I'm posting may be of assistance to others contemplating this subject.
(A build log history of sorts.)

Cheers.... HOF.

Hi HOF,
I'm starting the Santisima Trinidad in a few weeks. I’m picking up tips from several build logs to help me with my build, and I'm sure I'll find something useful in yours too!
Greetings.... Peter

Thanks Peter,
I wish you all the best with your build!!

A few more photos in the reconstruction of my log.
Decking, not enough decking in the kit.... I was lucky enough to have some spare 0.5 X 3.0mm Tanganika that I purchased many moons ago. (Billings)
I decided to plank the Deck without the Deck attached to enable trimming of Bulkhead Extensions prior to completing Decking.

Hull Planking - 1st cover
(I should mention that the Lime provided in the kit was substantial enough to complete the first layer of Planking.... Just.... :))

An aside to the construction stuff, I ordered Gold Decals for Bow/Stern from "Custom Hobby Decals" (Australia) as the kit provided rather "Heavy" slightly flexible, White Metal "Plates" to be let in/inserted into the Hull Planking.
I did not like that idea.

I scanned the original and sent to be manufactured.

Much improved!! :)

2nd Hull Planking
Deck Planking completion
Deck Houses
Inboard Bulwarks

(Much "Milling" of Walnut to allow completion of this stage....)

After allot of experimenting making my own Windows/Doors, I decided to use the kit Windows and replace the Deckhouse doors with my own.

A few more photos, Deck Furniture, Pin Rails, etc.
Focsle/Stern Monkey? (Top) Railings are laminated 4 X 1.0 X 1.0mm Walnut glued and clamped in a simple jig prior to installation.
The Deck Hatches shown ended up being re-built/modified a couple of times before I was happy with them.

I think that's where I'll stop for today and I'll get some more of this log recreated in the next day or two.
(I hope that this of value and not too tedious.)

Cheers.... HOF.

Deck Furniture/Fittings.
Not too much to describe here.
Things to note:

  • Kit supplied Anchors were "Admiralty" and required Bar Stock to be removed and replaced with correct Wooden Stock
  • Vertical Capstans replaced with A/L 10.0mm Capstans (I used "Bare Metal Foil" to simulate Brass Caps)
  • Scratch built Water Casks/Binnacle/Poop Deck Gratings
I was not too happy with the Aft Skylight, (Esp. "Glazing" pieces), but after allot of mucking around I finally came to terms with the completed item.

A great effort. I’ve never seen one of these models built before and I’m enjoying your effort, it’s looking good. Thanks for posting your build and giving me the chance to follow.
