Fremantle Highway Fire: ship carrying 3,000 cars burns off Dutch coast

The fire killed one sailor with the rest of the crew safely rescued. An electric car is believed to be the source of the blaze.

AMSTERDAM, July 28 (Reuters) - The car carrier burning off the Dutch coast since Tuesday night is carrying nearly 500 electric vehicles, ship charter company "K" Line said on Friday, significantly more than the 25 initially reported by the coastguard.

That's the second one, as far as I know. How many more before more thought is given to electric vehicles. I'm glad I retired from driving last year @ 78. I've no interest in electric cars in any case. Furthermore, I see electric cars are causing concern in police forces, as there are, at present, no suitable ones for police pursuits.

You have to laugh at the stupidity of the push to go electric, when in California they say buy EV, but then say not enough power in "The Grid" to allow charging and keeping all the air conditioning and lights on! No real plans to provide more power to the grid, as they are shutting down all coal and gas fired power plants, and retiring the last nucellar plant soon.

I have seen many joke postings on line saying charge your EV from wind or solar powered charging stations. You might get half a day charge in one week.

These are like giant container ships with single purpose and load.

Packed like sardines and no good way to contain fire when it breaks our deep in the middle of load.

Maybe interesting for some

Fact Check: Do electric cars catch fire more often than combustion engine cars?

A major insurance company in the United States recently conducted a study. Electric cars, according to the study, are in fact the least likely to catch fire. 25.1 out of every 100,000 electric vehicles sold caught fire. For the same number of combustion engine cars, 1,529.9 caught fire.

So be aware about your V8 - they are burning relatively often, but these accident are not mentioned in the news, because it is not a big story

But coming back to the burning ship: Until now nobody knows why and where the fire started

UPDATE: Fire-stricken Fremantle Highway taken under tow, arrives at temporary anchorage

It is sad, the ship will be scrapped after successful towing. Still, a great danger for the ship to roll over.

Well, I think it's important to question of those 1529.9, how many spontaneously caught fire for no apparent reason. My gut tells me most of them were the result of either poor maintenance, poor operation, collisions, or outright stupidity. Almost completely preventable.

On the other hand, I'm not going to badmouth cordless power tools simply because improperly stored Li-ion batteries occasionally catch fire in the hold of an airliner....
