French war-ship Fleuron 1729 - scale 1/72 - from Delacroix monograph

Hi Cri-Cri, your build caught my attention as I’m currently researching a couple of French ships that took part in the Battle of Barú (1708), where the Spanish galleon San José was sunk.

One of these vessels appears to have been built during the reign of Louis XIV. There’s limited documentation available, but the ship’s name was Le Saint-Esprit—a light frigate (Frégate Légère), armed with 24 guns and likely launched in the early 1700s.

From what I’ve learned, there was a significant shift in how France designed and built its frigates between the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV, with the latter placing much greater emphasis on making frigates a core element of the French fleet.

Hello Carlos,

Thanks for your message

Louis XIV died in 1715, and le Fleuron was built in 1729

It was the prototype of the new famous 64 guns, very different with the précédent 3 decked vessels like Saint-Philippe or Soleil Royal

15 years later, the naval science had made great progress, in regard these heavy 3 decked

I hav'nt. found the French war ships of 1708 at Barto

Le Fleuron (1729) could not be one of them, As said, Louis XV succeeded to Louis XIV in 1715.

Regards,

Christian

ello Christian,

Thank you for the clarification — you're absolutely right.

I’m still trying to track down details on the French ships present at Barú — it’s proving to be quite a challenge! If I come across any solid leads, I’ll be sure to share them.

Thanks again for your insights!

Best regards,
