Hi All
Big Enus here ! Qld Australia. Transitioning from aircraft to wooden ship modelling. I'll need all the help I can get ha ha.
Have made not so good choice already and starting with HMB Endeavour by AL. From what iv'e read this could be challenging. Have a trade backround fitting/machining and built some kits of balsa aircraft.

Welcome, Enus. You might be well-served to shelve Endeavor for a bit and try something more suited to beginners in order to sharpen your skills. Either way, please star a build log so we can all help each other!

Welcome aboard from Connecticut, USA. Having done plastic models for years I can tell you there is a big difference from one to the other, The good thing is, you probably have most of the tools you need for model ship building (except clamps, there never seems to be enough clamps). From my understanding one of the most common mistakes is to work first on a more difficult model. People often give up in frustration.

I usually recommend that you usually start on something much less complex. Here in the USA model expo has a shipwright series of 3 more and more complex models that are fun and give you a good foundation for your major project.

I don't know how available these would be in Australia, I am sure some of our members from down under can guide you on that or suggest good starter kits for you.

Also I suggest you peruse this section

There are also excellent build logs of almost any ship you can think of that will help. There are many valuable you tube videos also.

Hi Rob thanks for the info. I have just ordered the (3 build) boats in the ship wrights series. I just couldn't get any idea how long they will take to get here in Qld Australia. USA stuff normally takes about 1 to 2 weeks.Appreciate the help mate!

Your welcome. We all help each other here. Please keep us informed about your builds. There are many build logs about all three boats to help you. There are also you tube videos.

Hello and welcome. I'm a newcomer here myself, but I can tell you that it's all in the head. And you have the right head if you've worked with balsa (nasty soft stuff mostly) and you have a machinist head for precision.

Maybe a couple more specialist tools, and a bit of guidance on some of the techniques, for which you only have to ask to gather in dozens of different opinions on any given ship modelling topic.

Enjoy!

Jim

Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy the new challenge wooden kits will bring.

You might post your city down under, we have a few chaps in the forum and you never know when one is near you for help.

Hi again everyone! I have recently completed 1) The Boston Whitehall Tender by model shipways. 2) The Dory by model shipways. 3) currently working on pram. My next build will be the Musgongus Bay Lobster Smack then hopefully the (A.L. Endeavour) which I have been stalling until I complete my apprenticeship ha ha. As a newby I have been concentrating on building, tools and my office/workshop room. I havn't had the time to learn all about this website and would like to know where/how I place a photos of the completed ships and maybe start a build log on the Lobster Smack in February 2025. This site is user friendly I'm sure but at the moment its a bit overwhelming for me to work out. Thanks in Advance for your help.

She looks great ! You might consider building a more intermediate model before you just into the Endeavour. :)
Maybe like the Pride of Baltimore 2 from Model Expo or possibly the Occre Corsair or Buccaneer or even the Albatross. The addition of rigging will be a big step !
