One can make very simple and inexpensive planking clamps from various diameters of threaded rod, washers appropriately sized to the job at hand, and nuts.

In the never throw anything away category, I have a cabinet with drawers full of machine screws, nuts, washers, and wood screws. It’s amazing how often I need to make custom clamping devices using these threaded fasteners along with small pieces of craft plywood that I also keep on hand.
