I have seen pictures of gratings on models (can't remember where) that are split into two or three sections. This kind of makes sense to me as a 4 foot X 8 foot grating would probably be heavy and clumsy. If this is the case I would like to find out before I bury the hatches under beams and ships boats. I've looked in all my resources and not found any reference to this. Does anyone have any info about this?

No I don't have it. That series is mostly about the Swan series, right? That would be the right country and era. There is a lot of Swan ships on the web. I'll look around.

When I get home from work I'll see if I can find the information and post it for you. If memory serves...the panels do not have any framing between them.

I could only find one picture of a swan grating and it kinda looks like someone dragged an Exacto knife down the center of a batten and darkened the cut. That's what it looks like but I don't think that's how it was done. That said, I would think that in real life they would have made three complete gratings rather than cut a big grating into three pieces. Wasting away in Confusionville again. ;)

The picture in the book (again, working from memory here) is suggestive of what you just described. But I agree with you - it makes no sense to split a batten in that manner.

Thanks Paul. The TFFM guys obviously know more than me but that just doesn't look right. I feel that each section of grating would be fully framed, so to speak. Since I'm refitting mine I'll just have to go with what fits the coaming but I'll try my best to put a frame around each section. This is one of those redo's that turned into a disaster. I noticed that I had the battens going across the ship rather than fore and aft. It just went downhill from there.

This is how it ended up. I really struggled with making the gratings this time(see my " need a table saw expert" post in "Tools"). It'll do. still needs a little finishing.
