Regarding wood available in SA seems to be a bit of a problem, I have found it to be very expensive and of course you will need to rip it to size.
But, if you do find a good source please let me know.
ECO Timber traders have a large selection of exotic woods if you're willing to pay for it. They also have a branch in Joburg (Honeydew).
I am planning to build another ship and ordered the timber from Cornwall Model Boats in England. Their prices are really good.
