Hello from Burgenland in Austria.
I thought I would say hello.

I have been building tugs as teenager, now about 50 years later I am hooked to wood and historical ships.

At the moment for a warm up, after some years of break, I build HMS Trition from other forum (Model Ship World)

As I mentioned I have not been building anything for 15 or so years...

I have just undusted my never finished build of 17th century galleon...
unfortunatelly she is not in the best shape after kids used to play with her.
And I know I have made so many mistakes that I gradually gave up with the project.

I can sympathise with the sentiment that once you discover that your build to date has inaccuracies you lose interest. I had a Thermopylae like that. Then the hull and masts moved house several times, a cat head got lost, and figurative rot set in until it went to the breakers.

Nowadays though, I would consider that the builder was still trying different things, and my model was merely at a stage before the final result.

Hello Bruce,

The simplistic answer is that you use a rebate/rabbet plane. On curved work such as ships, that is often tricky, though for models you could make up a scratch stock.
We would need to know more about which particular rebate you need to cut to provide specific help.

That would only be appropriate for full size work. Assuming you are referring to the rebate joint between keel and garboard plank I would point you to a scratch stock.

To avoid hijacking Jerzy’s welcome aboard thread may I suggest you put ‘rebate or rabbet into the search facility at the top of the page? It pulls up a good number of previous posts and discussions that give lots more information.

Making rebates and edge fitting planks is an essential part of good shipwrighting. Looks good when you get it right. Time and patience, time and patience…
