Hello and thanks to everyone..First kit in 1978 AL Swift..no mentors , since FF,Bluejacket Olympia, Model Shipways Confederacy, and a dozen in between. Now into harvesting /milling my own wood. FL hurricane mahogany, NY basswood and cherry,, guitar neck ebony.. Lucky to have Byrnes saw and thickness sander now,,for years , an exacto knife and pull saw! Now, I'm into scratchbuilding 1770's frigates, Navy Board/ Admiralty style, and obscure, forgotten 1900's ships like the OKESA and a steam cargo ship ship christened the Diane Marie, wisely after my wife. and not my late dog Manning,,. 1/8 scale full ribbed in mahogany . I enjoy the interplay between various woods and brass, and stub masts. I found that with a little practice a PenPal pen maker can make some decent casks and cannon barrels..Gotta keep the brain active and challenged, That's what makes this hobby so attractive, Three years ago, I joined the Naples ship group in FL...great group and our membership is expanding.. OK, enough about me..I'm a technological moron so if I post any pics I'll need my 8 yr old granddaughter to do it... all the best,
John

Welcome! I bet there is a LOT of wood available post hurricane! (One thing to remember about harvesting wood is, if you're not kiln drying it, is to sticker the wood and allow sufficient drying time - sometimes a year or more). What wood species are you finding available? Looking forward to seeing some of your models! A great source:Screenshot_20241030-191206_Chrome.jpg

Welcome aboard SOS! We would love to see photos of your models, so if it not a big deal, can you ask your grandson, please? Also so, let your Naples members join the SOS as well.

also from my side a warm welcome here on board of our forum.
I am sure, that your granddaughter is able to help - uploading photos is relatively easy and fast to make.
Hope to see your models and work

Welcome to the forum, lots of great modelers from the Empire State here.

What source do you use to locate the salvaged hurricane wood?

Yes, I have a friend here with 900 acres of forest and a hobby sawmill..three years ago, I got an entire tree which were cut to 2-3 in X 8-10 in six ft planks.. I planed them with old Delta planer, ran them thru my jointer and ricked them up..Stored now three years in ventilatedship shop #1, where the big equipment is.. I built another 12x16 building where the smaller tools are used.. In FL, I all I have is a shed, which I share withe the odd gecko Burmese pythons and assorted critters. The Cuban mahogany tree came down during Ian,, I salvaged a chunk 3 ft 7ft.. Took me a week to cut it up. Two truckloads to NY.. My friend was a Luther, so I got a few guitar necks in Gabon ebony..now banned.. nasty to work with.. Cherry from my back yard..maple from wooden miter box..

mister ca.. recovering from prostate removal..all good, but slow..I can post some on Facebook when I'm up and running..guys..get checked.. so today, I had to get some tests. T he young receptionist asked what procedure? She replied ," I hope I never have to have mine out." I thought she was joking.. I assured her that probably would would not be an issue. She felt better and I walked away. John Coryea
