Hello everyone. Complete newbie looking to start a new hobby at the ‘older to know better but seldom do’ age of 73. Just ordered the seemingly popular Artesania Latina kit of the Bounty Jolly boat as my introduction to model ship building. Going to be a bit of a culture shock as plastic modelling is all I have done in the past. I have been looking around SOS and have found some incredible information on the dreaded planking which, once I get my kit (it’s on its way to me) and get started, will get me going in the right direction even if I make a mess of it…….

welcome aboard my friend

Welcome Graham to SoS.

I have been ship building on and off for over 20+ years and also built the Bounty Jolly to test my capability. It is a great way to start and I would encourage you to post a build log, to help yourself and be able to reflect on your journey of learning and discovery.

PS. If you are like most others on this forum you will likely be ordering the Victory kit to build in a few weeks time.

Would love to hear about that too.

Welcome!!

Patience and ingenuity will be key as you transition from plastic to wood.

Envision the steps several times, then test fit before glueing.

You'll probably need to invest in a few different tools, as the need arises.

This forum has been a great source of advice too. Have fun and enjoy the journey!

I'm looking for any reading on planking as I'm just starting out this hobby. I am a retired finish carpenter who still has the woodworking itch..
