Dear esteemed members of the SOS forum,

Hello to all!

I have finally actioned on my dream of scratch-building tall ships of the 18/19 century. I am at the first step of entering the "big league" and pretty excited. I have been reading posts on this site for about a week now, right around the time of my first serious kit purchase of the Artesania Latina's (AL) - Mare Nostrum. In fact I took the advice from the masters on this site in selecting the model. But I also have Mediterranean roots so it was an easy decision.

However, I am still intrigued about building my own model. But I am realistic about it so I am approaching it from a new angle. Considering I have kids and a demanding job, starting this journey with a 3 mast tall ship from scratch will probably exceed my limits and I may not be able to finish it. The AL's Mare Nostrum seems to be an easy enough model to be a beginner's one, or at least I would like to think so. I have read "probablynot"s build log and referring to it frequently.

I have one small issue though, the kit I bought did not come with the instructions nor the picture guide. So if any member has kept their Mare Nostrum instructions, I would be willing to purchase it.

So to begin the journey with a bit more skill enhancing way, and relying on my engineering background, I have decided to build a replica or a modified version of the Mare Nostrum from the AL's model by creating a 1:20 scale model of it (as you may know AL's kit is very well made at 1:35 scale). I have drafted the false keel and some of the bulkheads and attached it here.

I had a small construction company right after grad school, so I have more tools than my wife would like me to or my garage can handle, but they are all industrial size, so I do need to start acquiring model building tools (any advice is welcome) and supplies. And again being inspired from the posts on this site, I built my own keel clamp over the weekend to get going on Mare Nostrum.

Thank you and best regards,
Hal

Hi Hal,
If your keel clamp is a reflection of your skill set you'll do well with your first build. Very Nice. Welcome.

Hi J,

Thank you very much... I am looking forward to advance and share with the forum.

Hello Hal,
and welcome to the SOS forum.
I have one small issue though, the kit I bought did not come with the instructions nor the picture guide. So if any member has kept their Mare Nostrum instructions, I would be willing to purchase it.

I will see who can help you get your plans for you. Anyone here willing to help?

I would appreciate it. Unforunately, I do not have a set.

Donnie

Dear Brian,

Thanks again for the email and details, I am certainly in your debt and looking forward to pay it forward. I will reach out to Donnie and see if I can contribute to the maintenance of the forum.

I am definitely planning on starting my build log, though I may have some time lag in postings as I may need to travel to India to hire some new folks for my technology team.

I am going to build the original AL kit while attempting to upscaling the Mare Nostrum, therefore the 1:20 kit will require all new timber and hardware. I am in the process of reducing some cedar planing to size I had left over from a deck project a few years ago, but as I mentioned, all my tools are larger scale and creating model kit scale will take some getting used to (and some cash to acquire the right tools... I am generally in love with all kinds of tools so I am looking forward to it).

The rest of the brassware will take more advice from the forum as I post them. In the future I am even planning to purchase a low cost machining center too. I have looked up some pewter casting suppliers and watched some Utube videos though I have a feeling that I may need to purchase the structural strength requiring brass parts for now.

Thanks again for all your help and encouragement.

Best regards,
Hal
