Like many others out there, I'm a HUGE fan of Tugboats! I live in South Texas, we have a Busy Port, and needless to say, I get to see Tugboats at work! I really like the Conventional Tugs, their lines are Awesome, and when underway, that Bow Wave just parts the water, water builds up at the Bow, then sort-of falls back low along the side, then up again at the Stern! Neat to see!

Yep, my first project will be a Tugboat, and I'm gearing up for this endeavor, a 48" RC Tug. I found the plans online, its been around awhile, and there isn't much in the instructions as to building methods, or any "how to" details. So I'm gathering information, reading allot of material, and re-reading what the instructions are describing, and I'm getting it!

My first build will be the "Lazy Alan", a neat looking Tugboat, that has been represented in Plastic, many years ago! I'm sure some of you have seen it, was put out by Revell, and to this day, you can still find this little model, in 1/96 scale. I have one of these built up, in our display case, and bought another, recently, as a "go by" for details. I come from the Plastic world of modeling, been doing this since I was a kid, still enjoy the hobby, but now it's time to join the BIG Leagues!

Looking at the Plans, and comparing them to the small model, there's some changes I want to make, especially the hull, and some the super structure details, but I'm still studying the plans, and other reference material. I've attached the photo so you can see what the end result, I hope, will look like!

I'll be asking You Experts questions, and hope to begin this build next month..., I'm also building a workbench, Ship Yard, if you will!

Glad to be HERE!!!!
Lou

Welcome to SoS, Hawser! Fellow tug boat fan here. I've built the Sanson tug, the Centaur ocean tug (paper), the Cyclon II ocean tug (paper), a Revell New York harbor tug, a Heller Coast Guard tug boat, Revell's diesel tug, and the Heller Smit Nederlander ocean tug. I also collect die-cast Texaco tug boats (5 in the set), but my dog has gotten into my display case and ate most of the deck furnishings on my Texaco tugs. Good luck...I hope you have a good time here.

Welcome aboard from Connecticut!

I know the new Ships in scale magazine has an article in the Jan/Feb edition of building an RC tug the Anteo. It nay be worth a look.

Welcome, Lou from Central Texas - where in South Texas? I'm from Houston and spent much of my youth on the Gulf Cost so I definitely relate to the appeal of tugs. Would love to build one myself, along with a car ferry!

Hey Bill!

Thanks

I'm from Corpus Christi! Seeing you've been down here, around the Gulf Coast, then you may have seen the Ferry Boats at Port Aransas, Texas. I like the older Ferry Boats, like the one attached, these are really neat looking! The newer Ferries are larger, they do not have that appeal, but they do help keep the Ferry " Waiting Lines" short, due to accommodating more vehicles!

Thanks Again!
Lou

Thank You Sir!!

Wow, you are a TUG Fan! I build the Coast Guard Tug, I want to say Lindberg put one out too, maybe that was it. I have seen the Texaco Die-Cast Tug, may need to get that for my collection

Lou - If you are interested in the Texaco tug boat series you can find them in mint condition on Etsy. Now that my dog ruined the first set, I might just get a set of mint or near mint Texaco Tugs for investment and give my originals to my grandkids. They are fun to put out on display and also serve as coin banks. Here are some pics. Warning: Texaco also has diecast series of Texaco planes and delivery trucks! Have fun.

Welcome Lou to the forums and greetings from South Texas as well. I love my bench from Harbor Freight and I'm looking forward to starting my first tug. It is an early wooden hull model of the 1982 "Banckert" from Billings Boats out of Denmark. Magic Mike

Lou, agree on the appeal of the smaller ferries! Great memories of the Galveston-Bolivar ferries but they were definitely less intimate, though to your point they did move a lot of cars! Oh, the memories of waiting in line in 100 degree Texas summer heat!
