Doing a Billings Cutty Sark and am in need of mast /spider bands. Does anyone have extras for sale? Can someone construct for me?
These are beyond my skill level.
Thanks

I'm not the best modeller. I'm not the worst, either. I certainly don't have the parts. Can you buy parts from Billings? I guess not. If you posted an image and added dimensions to it, I'd know if I could make them.

I'm guessing from a Billing Boats kit that I made earlier, that it's a part they supply. Some of them, I broke, but fixed. Others, I broke irreperably and had to make from scratch.

Post a pic of what you need and I'll see what I can suggest.

I checked Billings and A/L and no luck. I am attaching a scan of a page of Logridge's Volume 2 that shows the part
Masts are .328 inches in diameter which is a 1.03 circumference.
Willing to pay time, materials and postage.
Thanks.

So, is this exactly what you need ? and how many of these bands do you need?
Or as the PDF stated, there is a spider band that also has 4 on each side to put belaying pins - that would be made a little differently. instead, the lugs would be positioned horizontal fot the belaying pins instead of vertical as shown.

When I built the Cutty Sark I used copper tape painted black, several layers to give it depth then I placed small eye bolts as needed around the mast. This worked out very well given the scale.

Good idea Dave,
that also makes me think that a very thick paper stock can be used. Small Brass rings can be attached to that and then everything painted black or white - ect.
I was thinking along the line of milling one out of brass - but that could take some designing and thinking. I do have a MIll and Lathe, but not sure if the final product would be applicable. The part would have to be slid onto the mast as it would be like one piece. Just some thoughts. I guess it depends on how fancy it needs to be.
Someone that has a 3D printer could manage this with no problems.

That PDF refers to the spider bands for belaying pins, as far as I can tell. The text is cut off but seems to refer to a loop of wire which is silvered with solder.I suppose that a round piece of hardwood could be drilled to suit the mast after drilling four small holes per side to take the belaying pin holders. Making the ring from brass sounds good... I could see many expletives being used each time a wooden ring snapped in the drilling process!

If it's the band shown in the pic, the lugs reminded me of something and then I remembered... automotive male spade connectors. They could be soldered to a brass ring or 'spiked' on the ends and glued into a wooden ring. Take a look at the connectors in this link. It may be of some use. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Paor-Conne...ocphy=9046728&hvtargid=pla-402986562920&psc=1. If suitable, they'd need to be sanded/filed to provide a key for painting.

I think he means this mast band with belaying pins.

Photographed 04/2017.

I would solve the problem this way without having to solder.: Bend your own hoops from a sheet of brass, glue them to the mast, drill holes, glue in eyebolts and slide securing pins into the eyebolts.

Best regards
Thomas

Thanks. What I was talking about is the lower band for the lift tackle. It is barely seen below the winch in the above picture. You can see the tackle, though.

Thanks again,
Jim
