Hello All!

Here have the start of my next model. The Herreshoff Dark Harbour 12 1/2 is a twenty-foot sailboat. Scaled to 1:8 means the model will be just over 30" long. This will allow me to include all sorts of nifty details. I say this because I normally design models for R/C sailing, and so need to make compromises in order to make a model sail properly.

Here are the steps.

Using some crude line drawings, we make a 3D model. We then compare that model to said crude line drawing; we compare with some pictures; and we just mull it around and around for a while, contemplating whether Nat Herreshoff would approve.

Once we have the approval from above, we insert the 3D model into our construction software and get to work. I like to work in steps. In the first step, we create a keel, and then create all the bulkheads. We don't detail anything at this point. The idea is to check that the shape looks like a boat.

The inserted pictures show the following:
- the first iteration had too much "swoop" in the stern. It was not acceptable and we went back to the drawing board. Old Nat would not have approved.
- the second iteration was clearly better and was good enough. Off we go!
- As we started designing, it was clear that the bottom of the keel was not quite right. We removed the keel from the 3D model and created a new one, right in the construction software. (If anyone really wants an explanation, they can send me a private message, and I will explain the magic)
- the bulkheads are inserted at the correct spots, as on the construction drawing.
- We take our first "Beauty shot" of an early rendering. She does kind of look like a real boat!

More to come. Stay tuned!
