Hello! I am hoping y’all can help me out.

I just acquired this ship from FB Marketplace, and it does need some TLC (I’m looking to hopefully restore it).

Can anyone tell me which ship this is, and possibly where I may be able to get parts like the small wooden dowels, string for rigging, I also know the deck needs repairing (or possibly replacing if possible as it has a large crack in it). I haven’t pulled the rigging that came with it out of the bag yet, but I’d like to know where to go if I need it.

It looks like a typical decorator model from the mid 20th century. About all I can identify is that the flag is Scottish which I'm sure you already knew. Sorry to disappoint but these are pretty much old toys of little to no monetary value. They rarely, if ever, represented a real ship but rather were more the figment of somebody's imagination. Regardless, if YOU like it, enjoy it, that's what matters.

The information about the ship model you received already
and definitely a warm welcome here on board of our forum

Oh. My. GAWD. You nailed it, Allen. ABoz, just about any model you build will be better that the ship-shaped decoration. It's only value is as a fun fix-it-up wood project. If you want a model ship, just get a kit and enjoy building it. It's hard telling a nice fellow member that they are looking to polish a turd.

I think this would be a good basic restoration project. A little research on how basic rigging is done. First, you need to mount or purchase the dowels to make your Mast and Yards. It does have a foremast, mainmast and mizzenmast sections. However, you might have to use your imagination as to how many Yards each mast has. I would keep it basic and simple.

Would a craft store like Hobby Lobby or Michael’s have the tiny dowels I would need? Or would I need to go to a model hobby store? I haven’t had a chance to go look yet, hopefully I get to next weekend. I am looking forward to restoring this, just need some direction as all my other models have been either plastic or metal.

you can even get dowels at Home Depot. The odds are you will need to sand them down to get the size you need.

My wife works at our local Hobby Lobby and yes, they have dowels of all sizes. They also have thread like line you can use for rigging. Look for like the DMC Cotton Thread should do. I think they have different sizes and colors. Get some bees wax too and run the thread through bees wax to make it more stiff. However, be careful not to get candle wax. Candle wax is not going to work well.

Not sure how seaworthy a full sized ship like that would be but it does have some fun, quirky characteristics and I think it would be fun to see what you can do with it without having to worry too much about scale and accuracy. Some good advice here about sourcing materials. I'd try a good hobby shop for the wood dowels and other smaller timbers you might need. As far as the crack in the deck, I'd recommend using a wood patch/sealer and staining it.

As for fixing the cracked deck, they use solid flat wood, never done on real ships or most models.

I suggest removing anything you can from deck surface and then apply thin strip wood which you can buy from Hobby Lobby or model ship supplier.

To loosen glue on fitting on deck try finger nail polish (acetone) or 90% isopropanol alcohol at joints and let it soak and then wiggle to see if they come loose.

What if you planked over the entire deck with thin veneer strips after using wood filler to fill in the cracks? If you stain the new deck planks with a similar color and coated it with varnish, you may be able to blend it in with the rest of the ship appearance wise. That may be an easier fix than trying to remove the deck and replacing it. You would not have to deal with removing the mast and deck equipment. You could just plank around the deck fixtures.

I suggest an “economy restoration” to avoid throwing good money after bad. Your goal would be to end up with something decorative. By doing so you can learn some modeling skills. I would start by removing all of the rigging. I would gently clean the model with a dry brush. Water may attack whatever glue was used. I would reglue any loose parts. I suggest that you ignore the crack in the deck. The model is not intended to stand up to close examination and trying to add some sort of veneer to paper over the crack can lead to more problems. You can then manufacture new spars and rig your model.
