Hello everyone on this forum,

My name is Fred, AKA the--Mouse, and I live in the Netherlands at de border of Belgium.

At one point, I started building wooden model ships. My last wooden ship was the Oseberg by Billing Boats. I worked on it for three years, and in the end, I didn’t use anything from the Billing Boats kit...Cautious

Then I discovered paper modeling, put all my wooden shipbuilding materials away, and since then I have been building exclusively with paper.

A few of my paper ships ( I have a lot more ;)) :

For almost the past two years, I have been building the largest ship in the world, the Jahre Viking in paper, scale 1:250.

And now I’m preparing myself for a new challenge, namely the 7 Provincien by Seahorse.
I’m currently preparing for this project, and as part of that preparation I’m using, among other things, Tomak’s build thread on PaperModelers.
Tomak pointed me towards this forum, which I had never heard of before :rolleyes:, and also to Bonden’s build thread, which I have really enjoyed reading so far, up to where it is now.

You can never have too much information, right?

So I will also start a build thread here for my De 7 Provinciën, and I hope to receive some friendly and helpful feedback from all of you.

Hello Fred, and welcome to the forum. Your Jahr Viking is truly impressive! Like Bonden, I can see that you are going to make a very nice job of the 7P. I look forward to your build log.
 
I think paper and card are seriously underated as ship modelling materials. I note that you models are mainly of the waterline variety. You might have a look at ShipYard kits from Poland, they do a superb series of small sailing warships. One of the problems you will face with paper and card is the 'bulkhead problem', wherby the bulkheads tend to show through the planking, There are ways you can counter this and one is to shape your planks to the curvature of the hull before they are applied so that there is absolutely no force needed to take them round the hull. One of the clever details on the ShipYard kits is that they print out each plank in its proper shape which is, as I am sure ypu know, anything but a straight line. I am attaching an image of HMS Wolf from a ShipYard kit at 1:96, that I made many years ago.

I useda very light oak stain on the deck of the Vanguard HMS Speedy and it did improve it, see attachment. The full tackle for the guns also helped. My Society - The Society of Model Shiprights UK - <modelshipwrights.org>. We hold a Zoom meeting on the fourth Sunday of each month at 1830. You will be one hour ahead of us I expect so 1930 for you.
