Thanks for the welcome. I’m originally from Aberdeen so I’m fluent in Doric – if you don’t know it, it’s a dialect unique to the North-East that uses a mix of English, Gaelic, old Norse and German words along with some original terms. When I go back home, I tend to revert to the Doric. However, I have a feeling that it will be a very long time before I’m equally fluent in shipbuilding-speak. So far, I’m delighted to understand what a futtock shroud is and I can’t wait for an opportunity to startle my friends by dropping it into a conversation…Gone yer'sel Jimmy......a bit of retaliation on the vocabulary front. As an ex-army wannabe shipwright, I face the same linguistic challenges. But, it opens up a whole new level of insight...not to mention the potential answers to sneaky questions on pub quizzes here in Durham, aka 'hostile indian territory' for an expat Jock! All joking apart, it's good to see another newbie to share the seafaring journey with. Welcome and kind regards, it's a great place to learn.
