I've been a member here for a while now and I just realised that I have not clocked in and said hello, so....Hello!!
I have two builds in progress at the moment.
First is a cheap Chinese "Black Pearl" that came with very poor castings of the Wicked Wenches and a figure head that was way out of proportion. I've done a bit of modification (including moving the capstan) to make it more a generic East Indiaman.

My other build is a 1:120 Chinese Newport baltimore clipper. Again I have heavily modified it. Changes include adding 6 more guns, making it 10 instead of 4. I have also added a steering wheel instead of the standard tiller. I haven't stepped the masts yet, but when I do, I'm thinking of rigging as a schooner rather tha a clipper. If it looks silly, I can always add yardarm and rigging.

Welcome aboard mate.

Welcome Dougie to the world of ship modelling, you really do have so many models, in kit form, ot choose from.
Choose the one and type that you fancy the most, be it ancient, wooden, or period /modern of a steel ship.
you do not pick something too large or complicated, you need something you know you can complete in a reasonable period to keep your sprrits and enthusiasm up. Learn from that then up the anti with a more involved model/kit that suits your wishes.

I started with HMS Endeavour, of Captain Cook fame,as a kit whilst recovering from heart surgery. Learned a lot, and obtained much helpful information from the superb replica that lives in Sydney and has sailed around the world. My model resides in a "glass" case to keep the dust off the decks and rigging.

My current model is of The Mary Rose from a kit, but modified to its original "as built form" rather than the later form in the kit. So a good kit build with an introduction to scratsh building above the main deck.

I tend to build models in the winter months of long evenings and then have outdoor interests in the summer and little or no ship building.

Best wishes and I hope you find this diverse hobby keeps you entertained and proud of your achievements.

Derek Payne, Stafford England.

Welcome aboard, or should I say G'day.
