Have been following for some time thought it was about time to say hello……. and pose a question…… sails or no sails on your model.. what is the consensus
Reason for, the question.
Completed
AL Santa Maria ( no sails)
AL Mayflower (sails)
AL San Francisco (sails)

Currently on the workbench AL Bounty and AL US Constellation hence the query as I’m yet to decide

As you can imagine AL are the most available here in Oz with some Occre
Purchase of kits from overseas incurs not only horrendous postage but also attracts import costs upon entering the country
I have been lucky enough to procure some (cheaply priced) kits from OS including Matuas Sovereign’s of the Seas and Victory stored away with several other AL kits and Occre Prinz Eugen

Anyway back to the original question….???

Welcome to the forum. I don't know the answer to your question either. I'm currently in the US Constellation construction phase. I'm about to finish the body wrapping.

Cheers Kaya
I’m up to the rigging stage and am finding it quite challenging as the plans are really basic….unlike my previous AL models which were more detailed
Previous criticisms of this particular AL model are now becoming quite obvious

Welcome to SoS Harro :)
Inclusion of sails is more of a personal preference so go with what you like. Unfortunately sails in the kits you mention are not realistic as they are so far out of scale with the cloth and sewing they use. If I have to include sails I prefer making my own with silk span which requires no sewing or high thread count cloth and hand sewing the outer seams and bolt rope and pencil lines for the panel seams. Go with what you like best. FWIW, very few fully rigged contemporary models include sails, but I have no idea if it was because it was easier to see how the rigging was done or if they could not easily make realistic looking sails.

You are right... the plans are really simple, no details are included, we are really having a hard time, but believe me, thanks to the masters here, we can overcome every difficulty.

Hello Harro and welcome to SoS.
There are many Aussies here and a diverse International group too.
You appear to have answered your own question, having used sails on two of your builds already.
I doubt you will get a consensus answer from the forum, but I suggest it is entirely what you think looks best.
For mine the ships with intricate and detailed rigging are best demonstrated without sails obscuring the viewers ability to examine the rigging details.
Many other modelers feel the difficulty of matching scale to available cloth precludes a realistic presentation of sails and so avoid an offensive attempt.
Ultimately its your ship and your decision, like captains of the sea.

Cheers Allan
As I’m only on my 4th and 5 th models I’m more in for the enjoyment and not so worried about being historically correct but I understand your point
I agree without the sails all the hard work of rigging is more on dispay
Still un decided

Welcome aboard. Part of the draw to sailing ships for me is the sails and understanding all the rigging that goes with them. At this time I think most of my ships with be done with sails.

Cheers Chestcutter…as I mentioned I’m yet to become overly concerned about historical correctness

Rebus I like the way you think….and agree….I’m leaning one way now

Hello Harro

Welcome to the forum from a fellow builder from Perth
I personally like to have the ships fully rigged with open sails as it adds to the look of the ship.
With out sails is ok but it seems quite bare to me

Regards

Rob

We will pipe you aboard, compadre! Welcome from the high desert of Utah.

Hello @Harro055, welcome aboard.

Whether or not to place sails on your model depends entirely on what you like best. There is no rule and certainly no consensus on what is best.
There will be members who believe that a sailing ship is only complete with sails.
Others forgo fitting sails to show off the enormous amount of work involved in fitting a full rig at its best.
Showing of the rig with (some) furled sails is also a good option.

Welcome Harro! From another member who lives in Perth! Should have our own Ship Modelling Club here!
I don’t have sails on my ship models as I don’t think I can do them justice. If the sails are not done properly it could ruin the aesthetics of the model ship.
