Have been following for some time thought it was about time to say hello……. and pose a question…… sails or no sails on your model.. what is the consensus
Reason for, the question.
Completed
AL Santa Maria ( no sails)
AL Mayflower (sails)
AL San Francisco (sails)

Currently on the workbench AL Bounty and AL US Constellation hence the query as I’m yet to decide

As you can imagine AL are the most available here in Oz with some Occre
Purchase of kits from overseas incurs not only horrendous postage but also attracts import costs upon entering the country
I have been lucky enough to procure some (cheaply priced) kits from OS including Matuas Sovereign’s of the Seas and Victory stored away with several other AL kits and Occre Prinz Eugen

Anyway back to the original question….???

I am currently preparing sails for this model, I feel without sails they would be incomplete, After all sails was the only reason they were built

I admit, my previous models were in plastic, and plastic sails do not look that good. Once I do a wooden kit I too think I will use sails, a they will be material.

As my models sail, "without sails" would defeat the purpose
On static models, when I did them, unless I was restoring a model that didn't have sails, I usually put them on, but... I almost always had them in sort of transition; setting sail, shortening sail, drying sails, taking in sail, setting taking in stuns'l, tacking, hove-to, etc, etc. All plain sail, with the yards squared I find dull on a model

Sails hide a multitude of sins, such as on this model with nearly no rigging (yet).

I don’t mind seeing sails rigged on a sailing ship as long as they look the part.
I really don’t like bright white sails on anything but a yacht.
Sails do detract from seeing the running rigging.
That’s the only reason for not adding sails.
Personally I do not add sails.
It adds a lot more work to make the sails look like sails.
I like to see the lines of the running rigging.
