Hello All,
It's been a while!
Unfortunately I have made no progress on my wooden build of HMS President. I confess I am struggling to find the time to get around to it, and it's rather daunting too. I'm hoping to try something simpler in wood to "learn the ropes". I have the Lowell Grand Banks Dory kit. Looking forward to that at some point.
I have however been building a lot of plastic models, and enjoying them very much. So I thought I would share some photos of my first plastic ship kit, HMS Belfast, from the gift set. This kit was a Christmas present from my son, to commemorate a really great day we had, looking around the real ship on the Thames. This ship was built/painted as per the instructions and box art (as far as possible - they do conflict in a few places!) almost exclusively with the paints that came with the set. Contrary to some opinions on the internet, I found all of the supplied paints in the little lidded pots to be usable, especially when thinned for airbrushing. When using a brush, the 96 blue kept getting a sheen to it, so I resorted to a bottled, newer version of the same colour that was fine.
I'm pretty pleased with the result. She took me quite a while. The Airfix "Vintage Classics" range are from very old moulds. This one dates back to 1973 I think, so there was lots of flash to clean up and plenty of fit issues. There are a couple of others in the stash that I'd like to get around to and hopefully with what I've learned, I can build them a bit more quickly and easily than this one. To make things easier, I would do all the major construction that I can before painting, to resolve the fit issues without ruining the finish.
Strangely, I'm probably most proud of the ship's boats! They are absolutely tiny. I've never painted anything so small with 4 colours and masking!

Happy modelling All!
