HMS Enterprise 1774 POF 1:48.

Good morning gentlemen. Plenty of fun with some sketchy outcomes. I thinned down the darker/redder cherry stain and did my inside thin stuff and gunports.

I like the overall effect however my hand drilled treenails into my veneer cover up did not produce the neat results I wanted. Luckily you don’t see most of these……whew.

I oiled the parts of the gunports I did not want the darker colour first and then applied the stain. The stain doesn’t stick to the oil so I could wipe it off with an earbud. The redder ports look cool. Super cool treenails on outside- dremel and proper wood make for better nails :D .

……and some more cannon:

I cannot wait to rig these….so excited ROTF.
Cheers from a chilly Melkbosstrand.
HI Grant, lovely work, the tone of the wood looks really nice and certainly sets the model off.

Looking forward to seeing all the cannons on the deck (fortunately, you only have to rig the cannons on this model!)

Looking really great Grant , beautiful work!

Thank you Guy and Dom. Dom, I do have to spend many hours with tiny blocks and hooks rigging the cannons. Not my favourite task, however there are many other things to make as I go- so should be fun.
Cheers Grant

Very nice, Grant! It also looks like you're cleaning up a few things along the way.

I have some cherry wood splines in my timber frame house - treated only with hard finishing oil - and they do look quite dark after time. In my case it creates a nice contrast with the Douglas Fir beams, but I'm not sure it is complimentary to the framing details of a small model. I'd say: embrace the look and make it the thematic scheme for the rest of the build. Cheers.

Just wow on your planking and treenails!

The joints around the grate and mast coamings are superb!

I think you literally "hit the nail on the head" for the amount of space you are leaving unplanked! It really shows off the construction details!!

The contrasting woods are IMHO perfect. Dark aged structural members are highlighted by the freshly scrubbed and holystoned decks!!

Thanks for sharing!

ust like with a dog, a post starts to resemble his master. :rolleyes:ROTF
True story Peter ROTF .
That's a lot of tree nails! Lovely work, and yes, just kidding about only having to rig the cannons, I know how time consuming it is to get the ropes just right, a lot of very very fiddly work with tweezers and magnifiers needed.

Dom
Thank you Dom. I like the deck nails. Subtle but easily seen- looks better with these than camera sections.

Thanks Paul. I’m with you here. My plan is to use the cherry to get a contemporary feel/look…. Well Grants version thereof;). I won’t build another Cherry ship however I’m having fun and feeling good about her now. I am busy cleaning up, sanding and prepping the whole ship now before I continue. I’ve also decided to move away from linseed oil which while brings out the grain and colour more it tends to make it dark. And dust sticks to it madly. Going back to poly to seal . Cheers Grant

Thank you very much Brad. With ship I have needed plenty encouragement as I have struggled a tad. Having plenty fun tho. As I’m doing the final sanding and cleaning up it is becoming more of the build I wanted to achieve so feeling pretty good at the moment. Cheers Grant

I really like the subtlety of the spike covers/treenails on the deck planking. Less is more in this case, nicely done.
Allan
Good morning Allan. Thank you for this. I was lucky with the maple spike covers as the crosscut did not darken much. I definitely got the look I wanted. The cherry, not so much as these darken a little too much. Live and learn ROTF. That being said I am very happy how it is starting to come together. Cheers Grant
