HMS Sphinx - Vanguard Models 1:64 by Ronald-V

Hi Ronald-V. I know this is not my business but may I suggest not to paint with white paint over so great looking planking? Paint will hide all the wonderful work you did.

Thank you! No worries, The white paint is limited to the inside of the side galleries and the captain's cabin. This is also to bring in as much light as possible. The rest of the hull remains natural (apart from what you see painted now). :)Thumbsup

Construction of the rudder. A central section with two beautifully laser-cut pieces of PE, showing a lot of detail on both sides. The PE parts have been blackened with a special liquid for this. But I am not sure if I would do it that way again for future PE, as I find the black comes off quite easily; perhaps airbrushing would provide a more solid layer. But in any case, it looks nice. By the way, I also tapered the rudder slightly, just as was common in real life... almost invisible, but still a nice detail.

The PE parts did not extend all the way to the hinge. I solved this by adding a piece of black paper.

Mounted to the stern post, cool thing with Vanguard Models is that the location for the gudgeons and pintles is already lasered...makes it a painless job to construct :)

Also noticable here is the little extra material to fill op de space between planking and sternpost facing. Doesn't look out of place to my eye :)

The rudder, and everything else is amazing. I thought you might find the following dimensions interesting as they are from the contemporary contract for the Sphinx class ships Perseus and Unicorn. https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-459363

The knee of the head to extend to the upper side of the upper Cheeks, to be 11ins thick at the stem & at the upper part or breast of the figure 4ins,
The taper at is quite a lot. There is similar tapering vertically as well, just as there is on the stern post and rother.

The stern post to be of good sound Oak Timber of the best kind free from defects square at head 12 ½ ins (which is to run up to bolt in the Quarter deck Beam) fore & aft on the keel, the back or false post if any included, 2ft. Abaft the rabbit at the Wing Transom 9ins & on the keel 2ft. not to have less than 1ft 4ins main post abaft the rabbit, the breadth athwartships at the head to be continued down as low as the Wing Transom & from thence to begin its tapering to 8 ½ ins as before observed that the main keel is to be wrought at the rabbit thereof, not to be bearded until the back is on & then to be no more than the tapering of the keel requires.

A transcription of a contract, when available, could be an interesting addition inside a kit box. :)

Where are you getting that last part about 4 ins at the figure? I transcribed the whole contract and I can't find that in my transcription. I looked at the knee of the head entry and it is as follows:

Knee of the Head
The knee of the head to extend to the upper side of the upper cheeks, to be 11 ¾ in thick at the stem, the 2 upper bolts to be 1 ¾ in diameter in the knee & 1 ⅝ in in the stem, the 3rd 1 ½ in diameter in the knee & 1 ⅜ in the stem, the fourth to be 1 ⅜ in in the knee & 1 ¼ in in the stem, the 5th to be 1 ¼ in in the knee & 1 ¼ in in the stem, & all the rest to be bored through with proper sized augers, that is to receive the bolts in the last drift, that no reaming may be suffered from the stem, in that the holes be bored before the canvas is put on, & the knee swung off to observe if the holes are all good, before any bolts are drove.

To have a throat piece of sufficient depth of elm, tabled & billed, & well secured with bolts drove up with plugs.
