Some of the ropes on a ship are wrapped with thin line or cloth: worming, parceling, serving. At the very least the shrouds on the Victory would be served and likely other lines as well. Serving served as protection against chafing.

Do you need it? That simply depends on if you are interested in showing the detail (most modelers do).

Thanks Paul is the SM4 a decent model and hopefully comes with full instructions? what materials do you need to make your own ropes, sorry for all the questions :)
If you go to their product page there are videos you can watch before you decide if this is the one you want. I happen to have the version with the motor and without the 'continuous' option. I run it pretty slow and rely on a bit of finger tension on the wrapping thread rather than letting it run on its own - but that's just me. To wrap I use the same thread I used to make the rope itself.

To be clear - this machine does not make ropes - it wraps a thread around the ropes you already have (or already made yourself). It only serves - it is not a rope walk.
