I find that my current project is put on hold (CAF HMS Granado) as i need to sharpen some of my skills. But my wife has presented me with a kit H.M.S. Wolf 1:48 1758/1759. According to Ships of the Royal Navy by J J Colledge, Ben Barlow & Steve Bush no such ship exists. There is an entry for a 10 gun sloop launched in 1754 and this matches the plans from Shipyard, but of 1752 & rigged as a snow. Can not confirm with plans from the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, confused an I.

The kit arrived in good time and was packaged well with no damage at all. Cut laser parts with a very fine cut, dowels and 3D printed parts with chords, etched brass, blocks etc. A build booklet and an A0 sheet for masts & yards. It is in 1:48 scale so should look good, but I think this is not an experts model as it has a printed/etched simulated deck, a keel and stem added after planking. The stem a one piece ends up as a laminated piece, even in the sales photos it looks a bit naff, but this has all the bits and together with some re decking together with other re working of parts stem etc I think this could end as a good looking model. All the hull planking is pre laser cut, mine being the pear wood version cherry as an option.

Plank on bulkhead build with some build features that are quite good. I am not going to delay on getting this project started as I have a Model dockyard 1:48 HMS Enterprise, a Hayling Hoy 1:48 to start together with finishing the HMS Granado though I think I will do the Hayling Hoy after this one. Lets see how this goes.

Well, If it never existed, you can really have fun with this one and focus your energy on developing skills. I’ll be watching with interest.

There is a really nice book from David Antscherl about the Speedwell, which is from the same Cruizer class as Wolf. Cruiser and Wolf were snow rigged, the other two vessels (Speedwell and Harpy) were ketch rigged. For Wolf exist a plan set from the polish manufacturer Model-Shipyard. This company provides a Cardboard and a paper model.

Who is the producer of the kit?

have learned how frustrating ships built after the invention of photography can be !
You speak the truth!! Closeup photos are the ultimate proof on our construction. Every time I think I got it perfect, all I need to do is to take a photo to find out it can be better. Hard on the soul, but good for getting things done right.

I have to admit I now have a problem, having bought kit from reputable manufacturers in the past I needed to buy a new kit, nothing big, like Model Dockyard Hayling Hoy. Had a discussion with wife as what I might do as the CAF Granado is on hold. Well without telling the wife I did purchase the Hayling Hoy. Well, my wife being a great wife bought me a kit without telling me. Now the problem. She saw a kit on a very well-known site 1:48 in Pear or Cherry and ordered said kit, great 2 kits now. It turns out the kit from the wife is not a copy or its very good one or it has come from the factory that are making the kit for Unicorn Models (HMS Wolf). I thought great a kit that would be good for build log only to be told by moderators that all is not well. I do agree with the policy of not encouraging rip offs, but what to tell the wife. I have looked on the web for Unicorn Models and can only find a Facebook page for new model coming soon. So this to me prooves that company’s are not copying designs but are being sold by the company who will make the kits or at least an employee of the company.

This should be a warning to all to be very careful of who you choose to do the manufacturing. Does anybody know of a WWW for Unicorn models & when the kit is officially released.

Should I continue with the build log

Not quite what i meant, i was more into those photo's of ships that show the exact lines of a hull when your kit looks like a brick,:( or when you have fifty photo's of a ship, but all different because taken over many years of the ships life, and the photo you find too late when you've just finished a bit and you got it wrong ! That kind of photo !ROTF

I appreciate your dilemma, but I think the choice seems clear: build the kit your wife got you. When it is nearly finished you can tell her how much you loved it and appreciated the surprise, then explain that there are less-than-reputable sellers on the internet so it would be better to discuss any future purchases first, even if it spoils the surprise.

My $0.02.

You are ok to continue the build log here,do not worry about other sites policies and their blatant lies

Hayling Hoy is a @Modelship Dockyard kit and is not copy of any of the existing kit or based on any existing book of the Hoy in fact if you want to use the Hoy book to build the kit you have to be prepared for modifications as the kit is not based on that book whatever the admins lying on that other site.

Wife presented you with a kit. Enough said. Work with it. Sounds brutal but love was behind it. Hard to fight the love thing. Should make the model special when completed.
