Hobby vise: This is a AMAZON item does anyone have it ?

Hi Guys: This vise is listed for around $ 60.00 canadian...good value or junk?

This depends on how you plan to use it. If it is for painting a plastic tank as they show, may be it is a good tool. Quality of this item is also impossible to judge just by the picture. Did you read the reviews on Amazon? What do they say?

Interesting that it has an integrated PE folder, but it seems a bit awkward and impractical to put that on the base of a vice. On the other hand, it you don’t plan to do much PE it doesn't look like it would adversely effect the vice.
 
 
The four vises in my shop are all bench mounted and the benches are secured to the wall. To be useful a vise needs to hold stock firmly. The vise that I use daily is has smooth jaws and is all steel. The jaws are about 3” wide and open to about 2”. I bought it in 1965. It originally clamped to a table edge but I have removed the clamp and it is now securely bolted to a piece of steel angle screwed to the edge of my workbench.

I also have a vise that rotates on its base but seldom use it.

By my standards, the Amazon vise posted above is too flimsy for serious work.

I guess it depends on what falls in the category of serious work. If it’s only being used as a third hand, it could be quite functional if the swivel stays securely locked in position. Much as I would live to have a heavy-duty vice bolted securely to a rock solid bench, my current shop doesn’t have the room for it. I need to be able to move my vice out of the way when I’m doing a job that doesn’t require a vice.
 
I can't say anything about that vise because I've never used it, but I can say that I own and use this one quite often and highly recommend it.
 
I had this cheap Proxxon clamp which was not stable enough to use with my X-Y table, but I was able to mount it to a machinist’s magnetic mount that I got used. The mount can be switch on and off so I can stick it to my steel desktop when I’m using it and then switch it off to move it out of the way. Pretty basic, but it’s become my go-to vice.

My vise is an omnidirectional (ball) model. While it mounts differently, the clamping mechanism is quite similar. USrat is a reputable brand in the world of modeling tools. I own several of their products and have been very satisfied with their performance.

Regarding this particular vise, it appears to be designed primarily for working with photo-etched (PE) parts, as the base even includes a PE bending tool. It’s not intended for holding and filing wooden stock, nor is it suitable for use with a drill press. Instead, it’s a bench-top tool meant for securely holding small, irregularly shaped parts during detailed work.
 
The magnetic base is a great idea. Now, all that you have to do is find a vise made from steel! Many of the new offerings are Aluminum. It looks like Namabiiru might have put an intermediate steel plate between the vise and magnetic base.

The adaptor plate is actually 1/4” acrylic salvaged from an old grease pencil status board from my Dad’s C-130 squadron. I don’t do anything with this that would require that kind of strength
