Hobbyist Haven

With 25% tariffs possibly being foisted upon Canada in a few weeks I will have to reconsider ordering anything from the US. I have ordered from Micro Mark and know they get many of their items from China. Just for giggles take a look at where most hand, cordless and other power tools come from. The lack lustre Dictatorship country of China. I blame the manufacturers for abandoning our countries for in some instances dirt cheap prison labour. A CEO's job is to maximize shareholder profit. I'm glad I already have most of the tools required for wooden and plastic kits. This possible trade war will benefit no one. I pity the new people coming into this hobby. Better have asbestos lined wallets people.

I find it somewhat interesting that we focus on hobby stores the likes of Micro Mark and Model Expo for our needs. I myself have rarely had the pleasure of purchasing from them. I scratch build so I have invested over many years in tools that worked well and some that were disappointing but never from a hobby store catering to ship modelling. This is not to demean them at all as they do have a place.
I love Jewellers supply houses which most large cities have but one of my favorite places is a nail salon supplies house called Daily Nails and again most cities have these types of places. You may ask what could these people offer? I use a RAM Micromotor instead of Dremel 3/32” and 1/8” shank capable 35000 rpm $350. At the nail salon supplies house I purchased this Micromotor for $69 35000 rpm probably made in the same factory as the more expensive counterpart. it even came with a set of Dymond burs and tiny sanding laps very smooth running virtually vibration free. I also get carbide and ceramic bits from them and they work. I carve both boxwood and pear. What I am trying to say is get out of the routine of purchasing your tools from the familiar places. If you need a quality saw but do not want a powered Scrollsaw look at Knew Concepts Jewellers saws, they are gems. I support buying local when not being taken advantage of; after all is said and done, “Capitalism has to be good for everyone” otherwise it will find an unpleasant end.

Many of my modelling tools were purchased from Lee Valley. Most made in Canada, Japan and the US. These are tools for woodworkers who carve etc. I have old tools from Sears, made in the US. Still 100 % serviceable. Not so much with some of the tools made in China. I blame American and Canadian suppliers who don't give a damn about the end product. They could have a very good product made in China but choose profit over quality. Let's see if any of those tools are around 50 years from now like some of the ones I use for modelling now.

I got those proportional dividers secondhand on a car boot sale years ago, they cost £5.with the above simple tools, I could make models two feet long, but went onto miniatures years ago, but have now stopped building them because of advancing years - BobScottish Maid (Large).jpg
