HI JIM, I AGREE TOTALLY, HOW DO I SOLVE MY PROBLEM, SOMEONE POSTED THAT THEY USE PASTE MIXED WIT SAW DUST AND SAYS THE SAME THING AS YOU DO BUT WHAT KIND OF PASTE ASKED BUT NO RESPONSE YET, IF YOU HAVE A SUGESTION PLEASE LET ME KNOW ALSO THIS BUILD MAKES IT DOUBALLY A PROBLEM AS IT NEEDS IT BOTH SIDES INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR IF I CA FIND A SOLUTION TO THE GAP/FILLER PROBLEM IT WOULD BE GREAT, I KNOW THE BEST THING IS TO GET THE PLANKS AS TIGHT AS I CAN BUT I KNOW THERE WILL GAPS, LET ME HERE. GOD BLESS STAY SAFE Don

Thank you Moxis. Would it also be possible to add sawdust to match the color of the wood?

I am not sure, not tried that.

Instead of microballs some people are using talc. But this filler can be used only if you are going to paint the model afterwards. If it will remain visible, only sawdust and glue will work as others have already said.

Hello Don,
First, and most important in cases where exterior and interior are visible, avoid gaps at any cost!! You will need carefully measure individual planks to perfectly fit before actually glue. You may use a cardstock as a template if necessary, before actually cut out the actual plank. Also, propper fairing of bulkheads\frames specifically at the bow\stern areas will help to achieve smooth transitions.

If you still have small gaps, use the mixture of sawdust, from the same wood you are using for planking, with PVA glue. Use as little PVA as you can to make a paste. Do not use CA glues, only PVA (white glue). This method only good if you have really small gaps. For large gaps, you better re-do. :( If you want your model look good, you better do it correct. But only you can make a decision, we all have our own acceptance level.

TOTALLY AGREE JIM, I MAY HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION, TO THE GAP PROBLEM, I USED ELMERS WOOD FILLER AND MIXED IN SOME SAW DUST JUST WHAT I HAD ON HAND, THEN TRIED A COAT OF TUNG OIL NO STREAKS, WILL TRY MORE SAMPLES AND POST THEM. GOD BLESS STAY SAFE Don

Hi All, I HAVE SOME PICTURES OF USING WOOD FILLER ( NETURAL ELMERS) MIXED WITH SAW BEACH SAW DUST ON BOXWOOD, AND THE BIG TEST IS THE PADUK ( *USING THE SAME WOOD FILLER AND A HEAVIER MIX OF PADUCK SANDING DUST) the main thing i was tring to see if the tung oil would take with out streaks so far it did, remember also i can get a mahagony filler and mix paduckn in maybe blend in even more, also what woul happen if i used a littel water in the mix pretty happy about this, please voice your opions, i will also post in my log also. GOD BLESS STAY SAFE Don

Hello Don, on the top photo the filler is really good. It is blended to the wood and actually transparent. Did you put already oil? The below photo, I guess the birchwood, requires more sawdust, IMHO.

HI JIM YES BOTH HAVE A COAT OF TUNG OIL, NO STREAKS< YES THE BEECH NEED MORE FILLER, will put another coat of tung oil on on saturday to make sure ONE THING I WAS WAR%NED ABOUT BY NIGEL ON THE PADDUCK NO REPEAT NO POLY JUST A 50 50 MINERAL SPIRTS AND TUNG OIL MUST REMEMBER THAT, what about adding water what wouldn happen do not believe i should use it what do you think. GOD BLESS STAY SAFE DON

Hi Don, I am not sure where do you want to add water, to the sawdust mixture? Why? You are trying to make putty by mixing white glue with sawdust, why will you need water? PVA has water. The best putty paste made almost from wood dust. Take a scrap of wood 240 grit sandpaper and sand to make sawdust. The dust has to be from the same wood, though!

I agree Jim, no need for water, what i did bwas no glue witvh would streak the oil finish i used ELMERS WOOD FILLER NEUTRAL JUST WHAT I HAD ON HAND mixed it with the saw dust from thickness sanding with out the vac on, lots of saw dust that way put it an empty pill container have lots of those LOL, then did the mix i had to use a lot more of the paduck dust to blend in i also can get a mahogony filler will blend in better the most important thing NO STREAKSB AT ALL TRY ANOTHER COAT ON SATURDAY to make sure so hopefully another problem plaguing me has been solved i hope , you know i have not in ages asked how the GRANDPA IS DOING WITH THE LITTLE ONES. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS DON

I’m a fan of those little tubs of colored putty, after stain and seal, you wipe the correct color in. they are linseed oil based, you gotta keep, water on the top for stg. Over the years, I’ve used them on a lot of jobs. And you can mix your custom color

On my Sapele Model., I used the dark wood glue and it’s own sawdust to fill some voids. You can’t tell

I use wood glue and sawdust and have found that the best results come from as little glue as possible. I put a nano amount in the crack/imperfection and sprinkle a pile of sawdust on it. Then immediately before the glue can even think about drying, I sand it mercilessly. For bigger jobs it may be necessary to build it up slowly but the same technique seems to work well.

Again, microballs are microscopic glass particles, almost like dust. When mixed with epoxy they make a perfect filler.
